You Can Attend Sundance Without Going to Utah

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Sundance Film Festival returns to Park City, Utah, but you can watch the movies online.

The 2023 Sundance Film Festival returns to Park City, Utah this week, but you don’t have to travel to enjoy a packed schedule of movie screenings. After several years of partly virtual (or virtual-only) programming, it seems like online showings are here to stay.

Festival pass specifics seem to change a little bit every year—as usual, all-access packages for both online and in-person screenings are long gone. However, single tickets for many films are still available, so you can fest from home on your own schedule between January 24 and 29.

How to buy tickets to online movie screenings

Before you do anything, you’ll need to create a Festival account (or log in if you already have one) and agree to the terms of service. From there, head to the ticketing page, find the online single-film ticket box, and hit Select a Screening.

Find the films you want to see and hit Select Film to add the ticket to your cart. Once you’ve selected your showings, navigate to your cart and follow the checkout process. Single tickets are $20 plus a service fee. The online Explorer Pass, which gives you access to short and indie films, is also still available for $25.

Films go live for online viewers on Tuesday, January 24 at 8 a.m. MT and are available until 11:55 p.m. MT on Sunday, January 29, which is the final day of the festival. Award winners will be available starting at 8 a.m. MT on January 28.

Reserve the next gen Samsung device
All you need to do is sign up with your email and boom: credit for your preorder on a new Samsung device.

Unlike in previous years when ‘on-demand’ films screened only during specific timeframes, you can choose when to start your at-home viewing at any point within the above window. You just have to finish feature films within five hours of hitting play (with possible exceptions for specific longer films), while indie films have a 12-hour watch window. You can browse the program and read more about the films here.

How to watch online movie screenings

When you’re ready to start screening, log into your account, go to My Schedule, and click Watch Now next to the film title. You’ll also find the Watch Now button on the film info page.

You can watch films on almost any device, though note that you won’t be able to mirror from a computer to a TV. Sundance lists the following technical recommendations:

  • PCs on Windows 10+ (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera)
  • Apple Macs on macOS 10.12+ (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera)
  • Apple TV, Fire TV, or Roku via the Sundance Film Festival Player TV app
  • Android tablets and phones on Chrome
  • iPhone and iPads on Safari
  • Chromecast via computer or Android phone

Finally, note that even if you buy two tickets to a single film, you can only screen it once. To watch it a second time, you have to transfer the ticket to another attendee with a Festival account.
