Why Has Netflix’s ‘Surprise Me’ Feature Disappeared?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Surprise Me, a Netflix feature that would help you decide what to watch next, is officially gone. Here’s why.

With over 10,000 titles across all its libraries, choosing the right movie or show on Netflix was becoming hard for people. To solve this, Netflix rolled out its Surprise Me feature to help users find something interesting to stream. Unfortunately, the platform removed this feature in January 2023, and here’s why.

Netflix Discontinues Its Surprise Me Feature

You may have noticed something different on Netflix: the Surprise Me feature no longer exists. It’s not a technical glitch; Netflix discontinued the Surprise Me button in January 2023 without notice. While it’s random, it isn’t the first feature to be axed by Netflix.

In October 2022, Netflix dropped its Extra Home feature four months after launching it. The feature allowed Netflix account owners to share their passwords with people in other households. Evidently, Netflix had to scrap Extra Home as it moved forward with its plans to crack down on password sharing.

Netflix is known to make significant changes to its platform as it sees fit—regardless of whether users agree with those changes. However, Surprise Me seemed like a relevant feature, given how many people find it hard to decide what to watch next. So, why was it scrapped?

Why Netflix Removed Its Surprise Me Feature

Quite simply, the feature didn’t pick up steam with users. According to The Wall Street Journal, a Netflix spokesperson stated that users already know what they want to watch when they open the platform. This means that the Surprise Me feature added no value, which actually makes sense.

Many users end up watching Netflix content because of the raving reviews and conversations around it online. Shows like Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Stranger Things, and Ozark are all examples of shows users watch because of social media. Fear of missing out—or FOMO—also exists in the streaming world.

If you’re one of the few users who aren’t happy to see Surprise Me go, you have other options. Most people struggle to find something to watch on Netflix because they search for videos when they’re under pressure to watch something. But the trick is to plan ahead or use an app or website to find what show is worth watching next.

While casually browsing, download any interesting Netflix videos for offline viewing, so you’ll have a list of options when stuck. Think of it as saving up for a rainy day. You might not want to watch those shows immediately because you have something specific in mind. However, they’re interesting enough to watch at a later stage.

Netflix’s Surprise Me Failed to Take Flight

Although Netflix users have always voiced their frustration over not finding something to watch, Surprise Me wasn’t appealing enough. Maybe it failed to stand out among all the options competing for your attention. Fortunately, there are many other ways to find something to watch on Netflix.
