The biggest Marvel movies tend to be massive superhero productions, but some titles—like Captain America: Winter Soldier and Black Widow—eschew superpowered heroics to delve into politics and spy craft within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The latest Marvel TV series Secret Invasion is the latest example of the form, featuring a storyline packed with espionage, double crossings, and double agents, with Nick Fury at the center of the action.
Secret Invasion premiered June 23, 2023 and is the first official entry in Phase 5 of Marvel’s superhero saga. Here’s everything you need to know before stepping into this story of covert ops within the MCU.
What is Secret Invasion about?
Secret Invasion focuses on Nick Fury returning to Earth after spending time away on the S.A.B.E.R. station in space. We see Fury reunited with Maria Hill (a character of the ABC television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and Talos, a former general from the shape-shifting alien race called Skrulls (who you’ve heard of if you were paying attention during Captain Marvel). Skrulls are essentially space refugees looking for a new home after waging a war for years against another alien race, the Kree. Years ago, Captain Marvel and Nick Fury promised to help the Skrulls find new homes. Now, Maria and Talos habe brought Nick Fury back to deal with a renegade group of Skrulls looking to take over Earth and make it their new home (that would be the ‘secret invasion’ part).
Where is Secret Invasion streaming?
Secret Invasion is streaming on Disney+. Like Marvel’s other recent Disney+ series, this one is only six episodes long, but it promises to have big ramifications for the MCU.

What comics is Secret Invasion based on?
Secret Invasion is loosely based on the 2008 eight-issue Marvel Comics event of the same name, during which it was revealed that some heroes and villains have been replaced with Skrulls. The revelation throws the Marvel universeinto upheaval, as no one knows who to trust—it seems the Skrulls have found a way to wage war on Earth under everyone’s noses.
The Secret Invasion comic book event also revealed the return of several heroes previously thought to be dead. It was a game changer for Marvel Comics that reshaped the status quo of many heroes and villains.
Will there be a Secret Invasion season 2?
As of this writing, Secret Invasion hasn’t been renewed for a second season. We probably won’t know for sure until we the final episode’s post credits scenes have been revealed. Though it’s possible the show will be a run and done, Marvel has been known to leave themselves space for additional stories—the second season of Loki, for example, is expected to arrive in October 2023.
