WhatsApp Community vs. WhatsApp Group: What’s the Difference?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

WhatsApp groups and communities are different in a number of key ways.

WhatsApp groups and WhatsApp communities enable you to stay in touch with several people at a time, but many users haven’t been able to understand the difference between the two.

What features set WhatsApp groups and communities apart from one another? This guide to help you understand the differences between a WhatsApp community and a WhatsApp group.

1. The Number of Members

In November 2022, WhatsApp changed the number of members that can be added to a group. WhatsApp allows you to add up to 1024 members in one group. This figure was initially 254, raised to 512, and ultimately to 1024. It helps businesses and professionals on WhatsApp to stay connected.

WhatsApp community is a directory feature, a way to organize groups under one umbrella, allowing you to reach more audiences effectively. The admin can add a total of 50 groups or 5000 people to WhatsApp community announcement group.

You can start adding members and groups right after creating a WhatsApp community.

2. Content Sharing

WhatsApp communities and groups are different in terms of content sharing. Users can send texts and media in groups, react to messages, create polls, and mention others. All members can share their desired content unless restricted by the group admin.

WhatsApp groups allow members to hold discussions and communicate with each other. Members can reply to each other’s messages privately or in the group.

WhatsApp communities work differently, as they are mainly created to give updates across groups. A WhatsApp community allows only the admin to send messages in the community’s announcement group for all the participants to see.

Members cannot react to the message sent by the community admin but can reply to a specific message privately. Also, community members cannot see who else is a part of the community.

3. Privacy

With little tweaks, you can change the privacy settings of a WhatsApp group; however, there are some settings you can’t change.

For example, when you add people to a WhatsApp group, their contact information is visible to other group members regardless of whether they are in their contact list or not. It gives users complete freedom to save contacts and connect with whomever they want in the group. It is a bit concerning that people you do not know can access your phone number just by being a part of the same group.

WhatsApp communities are different in that regard. Since communities were created to pass on updates, WhatsApp maintains user privacy by not disclosing their information to other members.

4. Features

WhatsApp groups allow everyone to connect and interact with each other. Users can send media like pictures, videos, and documents, their location, and share contacts in the group. You can also forward messages to anyone individually. WhatsApp groups have Polls by which users can give their opinions as well.

You can react to the messages and also select one to reply to. In other words, WhatsApp groups are created for mutual interaction.

On the other hand, features are limited when it comes to WhatsApp communities. Users are notified regarding any alerts or changes within the community. Besides this, only the admin can share content such as location, media, contact number, and documents. There is no option to create a poll to get members’ feedback in the community.

WhatsApp groups allow you to make as many admins as you want. On the other hand, WhatsApp communities allow users to make up to 20 admins at a time.

5. Calling Features

Groups allow you to hold voice and video calls with up to eight members. The conversation is end-to-end encrypted and suitable for holding small meetings.

Users can also send a message and pause the video while on a WhatsApp call. You can minimize the screen and navigate to other apps without disconnecting the call.

Like messages, users cannot place a WhatsApp audio or video call in communities. Since communities are to address your messages to many people, the members have no calling option.

Expand Your Connections With WhatsApp Groups and Communities

Although both WhatsApp groups and WhatsApp communities aim to bring people together, there are notable differences between the two.

WhatsApp groups are more inclined towards mutual discussion and participation. So, if you want mutual engagement with other members, make a WhatsApp group.

On the other hand, if you do not want any interaction from the members, making a WhatsApp community is a better option. In a WhatsApp community, only the admin can send messages and media. Other users cannot call or even react to the messages sent by the admin. So, choose wisely and then connect with other users accordingly.
