What’s the Fuss About the New VW Electric Bus, the ID. Buzz?

Reading Time: 5 minutes

The EV successor to the iconic VW Bus has finally arrived.

An eagerly anticipated moment has finally arrived—Volkswagen will finally start producing the all-new electric VW ID. Buzz. It’s undoubtedly one of the most long-awaited vehicles in recent memory.

The VW bus holds an iconic position in automotive history dating back to the 1950s. Volkswagen’s decision to bring the model back in an updated, fully electric version is a genius and long-overdue idea.

Now that VW’s EV bus has reached a fever pitch and is finally available for pre-order, is it really worth the fuss?

VW ID. Buzz Overview

The ID. Buzz shares the same platform as the electric Audi e-Tron and VW ID.4. Within such a competitive EV market; the VW electric bus fills a largely untapped niche by offering a family van EV option. Volkswagen has been slowly dropping details about the upcoming ID. Buzz EV, and now potential buyers know what to expect when it ships in 2024.

Even with all the improvements and technological advancements, the ID. Buzz still evokes nostalgia. It still screams excitement and fun and makes you want to hit the road and explore new places, just like the Volkswagen Type 2.

It’s confirmed the ID. Buzz will have different specifications for the US and European versions. Both a short-wheelbase passenger and commercial version will be available in Europe, while America will only get a long-wheelbase passenger version. Additionally, the American version will seat seven passengers in standard three-row seating.

According to UK’s carwow, five trim levels will be available.

Interior, Exterior, and Storage Space

The VW ID. Buzz has a lot riding on it, especially as it’s carrying on the original and iconic VW Bus. So, let’s see what it has to offer.

Interior

Volkswagen is making minivans cool again with a groovy exterior and plenty of passenger space thanks to its open layout. The interior seating can also be arranged in a variety of ways. The VW electric bus is a good option for those who want a family minivan, so much so that you could add it to our list of best EVs for dog owners.

A neat and convenient feature of this EV is its adjustable armrests and fold-down tables for rear passengers. The center console between the front seats is also removable for added convenience. A selection of massage chairs and adjustable ambient lighting with 30 different colors are also available as premium options.

VW improved on the term ‘eco-friendly,’ even going one step further by demonstrating their attention to detail. All the materials in the cabin are recycled. It also substituted animal products for those made of more environmentally friendly materials. One such improvement is a steering wheel covered in polyurethane, which resembles premium leather in both appearance and texture.

When it comes to being environmentally conscious, Volkswagen is putting its money where its mouth is. VW offers an electric vehicle that does more than just reduce emissions—it also promotes recycling.

Exterior

The new electric bus from Volkswagen exudes charisma and good vibes. Staying true to its hippie roots, the ID. Buzz still has the same boxy shape but with a modern aesthetic.

Despite the shape, it is surprisingly energy efficient due to its low drag. Rear wrap-around lights are simple yet stylish, and the spoiler adds to its cool factor.

The pronounced ‘VW’ badge on the front and back of the EV bus is a nod to its predecessor. A smiley honeycomb grill and sharp LED matrix headlights give the EV VW bus a happy and futuristic appearance.

Storage Space

The electric VW bus has more than enough space for storage with a 1,121-liter trunk. Storage can be increased by adjusting its floor height and folding the rear seats into a flat, uniform surface.

Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz Cargo trim is the commercial version designed for workspace and practicality. The electric bus comes with a detachable ‘Buzz Box’ that houses a handy ice scraper and bottle opener. A laptop or clipboard can also be stored inside its top section.

With all of these awesome features, it’s no wonder it was voted MPV of the year at Top Gear’s 2022 Awards.

Safety, Connectivity, and Infotainment System

The EV bus has no problem with connectivity in a high-tech world. Its operating functions are fully digital, with an innovative infotainment system. Smartphones and even laptops can be quickly charged with any of the three onboard USB-C charging ports that come as standard. You can also get three more additional ports as an option.

Touch functionality on the multipurpose steering wheel controls the 5.3-inch display in the digital cockpit. Located in the center of the dash panel is a 3-D 10-inch or 12-inch touchscreen with digital radio, ‘Discover Pro’ navigation updated via the internet, and vehicle data. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features.

Using your smartphone to connect with the ID. Buzz is simple and adds to the experience. When you bring an Android device into your car, you can significantly improve your driving experience.

Other available tech options include:

  • Voice control
  • Subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Bluetooth, including music streaming
  • Hands-free telephone function with LTE
  • ‘Comfort’ phone interface with inductive charging
  • Park Assist
  • ‘Park Assist Plus’ with memory function
  • Travel Assist, Lane Assist, and Emergency Assist (‘Autonomous Emergency Brake Assist’) with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring
  • 12-volt power outlet located in the back cargo section

Specs, Charging, and Range

Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz is the same old bus at heart but with a whole new attitude. An 82-kWh lithium-ion battery powers either a single rear-wheel-drive motor or a dual motor with all-wheel drive. The single-motor configuration produces 201 horsepower, while the all-wheel drive makes 295 horsepower.

According to Volkswagen, VW’s EV bus has dynamic steering and a range of 258 miles on a single charge. Owners can also charge their ID. Buzz from 5 to 80 percent via DC fast charge in only 30 minutes. Other notable specs include:

  • 33.15 kWh/100 mi. (102 MPGe)
  • 0-60 mph: 9.7 sec
  • 1-gear automatic transmission
  • 1653.47 lbs. Towing capacity without brakes

Volkswagen ID. Buzz Reception and Price

Knowing what we can expect from VW’s electric microbus, the wait has been well worth it. It’s a well-executed retro vehicle that offers a refreshing change from SUV EVs. According to an October 28th Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle report, ID Buzz pre-sales exceed 20,000. The electric bus is doing exceptionally well in Europe, with Norway and Germany emerging as its leading markets.

Pricing for the base model ID. Buzz starts from $45,000, but it’s eligible for the federal tax credit, thus potentially lowering its overall price. If you’re planning to get one, you should also check for other local and state incentives, which might also apply.

A New Classic Car in the Making

In summary, Volkswagen’s decision to reintroduce the VW bus in an all-new electric package was brilliant. The EV’s pre-sale figures demonstrate this. Non-SUV electric family vehicles are scarce in the EV market. As a result, the ID. Buzz’s arrival comes at an ideal time, putting it in a class all by itself.

With its nostalgia and extensive high-tech features, Volkswagen’s EV bus is poised to dominate the MPV class. It may also shake up the electric SUV market by convincing potential SUV EV owners to switch to a more traditional family vehicle that is now electric.
