What’s New on Prime Video in July 2022

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Let’s hope Paper Girls fares better than the last straight-to-streaming Brian K. Vaughan comic adaptation.

After a tortured development process that involved multiple failed films and more than a few false starts as a TV series, Y: The Last Man premiered on Hulu, finally bringing celebrated comics writer Brian K. Vaughan’s post-apocalyptic opus to the small screen. It was promptly canceled before the first season had even finished airing. Let’s hope things go better this time around, as Amazon’s Prime Video debuts its series’ take on Vaughan and artist Cliff Chiang’s Paper Girls on July 29.

Aside from a brief teaser, we don’t have much to go on so far in terms of footage, but this adaptation came about more quickly at least. Amazon first acquired the project in 2019 before ordering it direct to series in 2020. It’s easy to see the appeal—set in the 1980s and following four young teen girls who get caught up in a time-twisting sci-fi mystery, it gives off a Stranger Things vibe and pulls from award-winning source material to boot.

Also arriving this month is a TV show less squarely aimed at my particular nerdy ’80s kid demo, The Terminal List (July 1), a big budget military thriller series starring Chris Pratt as a former Navy Seal investigating a conspiracy. The series is based on a novel series by Jack Carr.

Prime Video is also dropping a few sweet-looking original films. Don’t Make Me Go (July 15) stars John Cho as a father with a serious medical condition who chooses to take his teenage daughter on one last road trip to ensure she has good memories of her time with him (sob). And Anything’s Possible (July 22), directed by Billy Porter (of Pose fame), focuses on a burgeoning relationship between a teenager transgender girl and a cute boy at her school.
