What’s New on Netflix in August 2022

Neil Gaiman’s beloved comic series The Sandman finally comes to the medium-sized screen next month.

While every month of Netflix arrivals includes a little something for everyone, the most obviously anticipated August release is the big-budget, star-studded adaption of Neil Gaiman’s seminal comic The Sandman (Aug. 5). The cast features Tom Sturridge, Jenna Coleman, Gwendoline Christie, Taron Egerton, as well as the role I’m most excited to see come to life: Kirby Howell-Baptiste playing Death. If done well, The Sandman could be a huge, much-needed hit for Netflix. And we have good reason to keep our expectations high, considering the fact that Gaiman was closely involved in the process of adapting his story for the streamer.

A few other titles stand out next month. There’s another supernatural comics adaptation Locke & Key winding down with its third season (Aug. 10). Also coming back for a third season is Mindy Kaling’s Never Have I Ever, a heartwarming and sharp comedy that I’m glad to see renewed (particularly because Netflix is quick to send fan-favorite shows to the chopping block these days).

For Netflix original films, there’s Day Shift (Aug. 12), starring Jamie Foxx as a blue collar dad by day and vampire slayer by night. Speaking of movies that your father will probably like, Me Time (Aug. 26) features Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg on a wild romp while the wife and kids are away. Classic dad cinema.
