What’s New on Hulu in August 2022

Would a Predator by any other name not be as gory?

Usually the whole point of making a new installment in a long-running franchise is to cash in on the name recognition, so consider me confused as to why Hulu is hiding the fact that they are releasing a new spinoff of the 1987 sci-fi horror classic Predator by calling it, simply, Prey.

Granted, maybe the series’ rep seemed a bit tarnished after the critical lambasting and general audience indifference that greeted Predator 2, Alien vs. Predator, Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, and The Predator—hmmm, that’s basically all of the post-Pretador Predators save for, uh, Predators (2010). Maybe I do get it. Go ahead and call it Prey. Heck, release it direct to streaming (say, on Aug. 5?).

With a plot that serves as a prequel to the rest of the films and centers around a hunter from a Comanche tribe circa 1719, it does promise to put more of a focus on developing its humans at least as much as its iconic alien antagonists.

Also coming to Hulu in August: A second season of the excellent Indigenous teen comedy Reservation Dogs (Aug. 3), which deserves to be a What We Do in the Shadows-level hit, and two sports documentaries; Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers (Aug. 15) is a limited series exploring the rise and fall of that storied sports franchise, and Mike (Aug. 25) is an eight-episode deep dive into the complicated, scandal-strewn career of disgraced boxer Mike Tyson.
