What’s New on HBO Max in March 2023

Succession and Perry Mason are both back, but a lot of other stuff is leaving.

Fire up the meme engines: Succession is coming back to HBO Max on March 26 for what we now know is its final season of corporate and familial back-stabbery. I don’t watch it because I find it too depressing, but I’m happy for everyone who delights in this modern-day corporate Game of Thrones, and I can only hope the next season also ends with most of the major characters crushed under a collapsed building (charred to death by dragon fire seemingly unlikely).

Also returning to HBO Max this month: The hat-based detective series Perry Mason, which stars Matthew Rhys in a dour update of the vintage crime show. It’s been about three years and one behind-the-scenes shakeup since the first season ended, and given the speed at which HBO’s new boss has been cancelling legacy shows, I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up being Perry’s final case.

That’s the list of the big additions to HBO Max this month. You’ll notice below that the list of what’s leaving is much, much longer. Nearly 200 films and TV shows are leaving the service by the end of March, most of them older catalogue titles that, no, probably weren’t why anyone signed up for the service, but the loss of which will definitely make it feel like less robust an offering—especially if they aren’t replaced with new offerings in the coming months. Sometimes you want to watch The Last of Us, yeah, but other times you just want to watch a ’90s classic like Dances With Wolves (exiting the service on March 31). HBO Max used to excel in offering both. Seems like that might be changing.
