What Is Google Imagen AI? How to Try It in Beta

Reading Time: 3 minutes

It’s no shock that Google would develop its own AI image generator. Imagen AI is not quite like the rest, though.

Google has its own AI model, and it’s called Imagen. The suspected play on the words ‘Imagine’ and ‘Image’ sort of tells you what it’s all about. Like many other AI text-to-image generators, you can produce an image simply with a text description, letting you bring to life your wildest imagination.

What sets Imagen AI apart is that its initial release has very specific limitations. You can use the AI model to either generate buildings with different themes or style an animated creature.

Here’s what you need to know about Imagen AI and how to try it in beta access.

What Is Google Imagen AI?

Imagen AI is a text-to-image diffusion model developed by Google. It adds to the growing list of AI text-to-image generators, such as DALL-E 2, Dream by Wombo, and Stable Diffusion, all of which can create amazing images from a text description.

Google has released Imagen through an app called AI Test Kitchen, and if you haven’t heard of it before, it’s worth checking out. This is where Google likes to test different AI projects before they are released to the public. We’ll cover how to get access to Imagen later on.

Behind the scenes, the dataset used to train Imagen is LAION-400M. Not all AI companies choose to make this information public and DALL-E 2 is probably the best example of this.

The use of datasets has also become a controversial topic, due in part to its practice of scraping millions of images from the internet. Artists in particular have criticized AI companies for not gaining consent from the owner of an image or artwork before using it to train its AI model.

If you’re concerned about your images, you can find out if your image was used to train an AI model and opt out.

With this in mind, Google has cautiously released Imagen, first through beta access, which you can try via the AI Test Kitchen app. From the first-look gallery of images produced by Imagen, its strength lies in creating photorealistic outputs. You can head to the Imagen research page to see the images for yourself.

How It’s Different From DALL-E or Midjourney

What makes Imagen unique is that it’s designed to produce two very specific outputs based on functions named City Dreamer and Wobble.

City Dreamer is somewhat reminiscent of a game like Sim City, where you construct buildings to create a town. With Imagen, you can describe something like a house made out of s’mores, and it will render your description into an image.

Wobble, on the other hand, generates unique creatures based on your description, and they kind of look like animated Pixar characters (think Monsters Inc., for example). Some of the things you can play with are the kind of clothes the creature will wear, or what material the creature is made from.

On a technical level, Google’s research into AI text-to-image systems has found that using larger language models is the key to creating higher-quality images. Plus images that more closely align with the text description.

Since you’re limited to creating a building or a creature, however, it’s difficult to compare Imagen to the likes of DALL-E or Stable Diffusion. At least, for now. If you haven’t tried the competition, check out how to use DALL-E to create images from text.

How to Try Imagen in Beta

For now, Imagen is only available to a small group of people during the beta release, through the AI Test Kitchen app. It gives Google a much-needed chance to get feedback from users and fix any problems with the model before it goes mainstream.

Want to try Google Imagen AI for yourself? You can register your interest for Imagen AI beta on the AI Test Kitchen website. During the signup process, you will be asked to state your country, device (Android or iOS), profession, and why you want to use AI Test Kitchen.

If you’re one of a select few who get a chance to test drive Imagen, make sure to provide plenty of feedback. While there are some obvious pros and cons to AI art generation, we want to see a future where AI models are safe for everyone to use.

Google Imagines New AI Applications With Imagen

It wasn’t going to be long before heavy-weight tech companies like Google started experimenting with AI models. Imagen is yet another text-to-image AI generator that will no doubt be a lot of fun to play with. Make sure to register your interest, and download Google’s AI Test Kitchen app to see more projects in development before anyone else.
