What Is Card Cracking and How Can You Prevent It?

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Card cracking is another scam where something that seems too good to be true is, yes, too good to be true.

If you use a debit card, then you need to be aware of the dangers of card cracking. This is a growing trend among criminals that can lead to serious financial trouble. With card cracking, criminals can use your cards to make unauthorized purchases.

So, what is card cracking, and how can you prevent it from happening to you?

What Is Card Cracking?

Card cracking is a type of financial crime where infiltrators attempt to lure you into giving them your bank account or debit card information in exchange for a fast, easy money-making opportunity. Usually, attackers target victims by social engineering through email, social media, text messages, or phone calls. These attackers can be very convincing and will make their victims believe that they are legitimate.

The attacker uses the debit card or bank information to deposit a phony check and instantly withdraw that money, leaving a small portion for the victim too.

However, since the check is stolen or fake, it is later on returned against the victim’s account, which creates a negative balance, and the victim becomes a criminal accomplice.

To clearly understand this, here’s an example. Suppose someone calls or texts you and tell you that they have a $10,000 check that they urgently need to cash out, but they don’t have a bank account to deposit that check. So they cleverly frame a fake scenario and ask for your help to make the deposit in your bank account. In return, they promise to leave a certain amount, say, $1500, in your account.

In the hope of helping someone in need (and earning $1500!), you might give them your card details to make the deposit. However, what you don’t know is that they will withdraw all the amount of the deposited check and leave a negative balance in your account.

How Is Card Cracking Conducted

Card cracking is conducted by skilled scammers who plan everything in advance to conduct the scam successfully. Here are the general steps they take.

Step 1: Steal or Create a Phony Check

First, the criminal steals a check or creates a phony check using digital forgery techniques. This check is used as a base for the scam.

Step 2: Lure Victims to Get Their Card Details

The attacker will then lure victims by offering them a money-making opportunity in exchange for their card details. To lure in victims, they use online platforms such as social media, emails, texts, or phone calls to explain their urgent financial situation. They also promise some money in return for making it look like a genuine opportunity. The victim then provides their debit card or banking details in exchange for the offer.

Step 3: Deposit Phony Check into Victim’s Account

The attacker deposits the phony check into the victim’s account, and once it appears in their statement, they instantly attempt to withdraw that money.

Step 4: Withdraw Funds from Victim’s Account

Next, the attacker will withdraw all the funds from the victim’s account. Sometimes, they will leave a small portion of it for the victim, making it look like a legitimate deal.

Step 5: Check Is Returned Against the Victim’s Account

Since the deposited check is fake or stolen, it will eventually be returned to the victim’s account. This creates a negative balance in their accounts and makes them liable to pay back that amount with penalties.

Step 6: Victim Becomes a Criminal Accomplice

The victim is now stuck with a negative balance in their account, and the criminal has successfully transferred the funds to a different account. The victim is also liable for legal action if found guilty of being a party to criminal activity.

Who Are the Common Targets of Scammers?

Card cracking targets innocent victims who do not have the necessary knowledge to differentiate between genuine and fake activities. These scammers sometimes even target children.

Here are the most common victims of card cracking:

  • College students: College students are more prone to falling prey to scammers due to their lack of financial literacy. They can also easily get attracted to earn quick money.
  • Seniors: Some seniors may not be familiar with modern-day technologies and scams, making them an easy target for card cracking.
  • People in debt: People who are already struggling with repayments of loans or debts can easily fall into the trap of card cracking.

How Card Cracking Affects Cardholders

Card cracking can leave the cardholder in a precarious position as they are liable to pay back the money that has been fraudulently withdrawn from their accounts. They may also face legal action if found guilty of being involved in criminal activities.

Additionally, they may have to bear huge penalties imposed by banks or financial institutions. In addition, victims of card cracking can suffer from financial losses, damage to their credit score and reputation, or even identity theft.

How to Protect Yourself From Card Cracking

The best way to protect yourself from card cracking scams is to stay alert and informed about any suspicious activity. Here are some tips that can help you protect yourself:

  1. Be aware of scammers: Be aware of all types of online scammers who try to fraud people by offering them money-making opportunities. Avoid becoming a victim of scambaiting by not taking part in any activities that seem suspicious or too good to be true.
  2. Don’t share your card details: Never share your card details with anyone, especially if you’re not sure about their intentions. Also, make sure to keep an eye out for any unauthorized activities on your accounts so that you can take prompt action in case of any fraudulent activity.
  3. Check references: Before you make any transactions with someone, make sure to check their references. If the person is not known to you or your family, avoid making any transactions with them.
  4. Use fraud protection services: To protect yourself from online fraud, use reliable fraud protection services such as credit monitoring services that can help detect any suspicious activity on your accounts.
  5. Monitor your bank statements: Always check your bank statements for any unauthorized transactions and report them to your bank immediately if you find any discrepancies.
  6. Be aware of phishing attempts: Always be wary of any unsolicited messages that offer you money-making opportunities. These are often phishing attempts that may contain malicious links or attachments.
  7. Stay up-to-date with the latest technology: It is essential to keep up with the latest security advancements and stay ahead of scammers. Utilize two-factor authentication, use strong passwords, and enable other security features that can help protect your accounts from any unauthorized access.

Avoid Participating in Card Cracking

Card cracking can be very dangerous and can lead to huge losses. To stay safe online, always be aware of any suspicious activities on your accounts and avoid participating in card cracking schemes. Also, make sure to use reliable fraud protection services that can help detect any fraudulent activity and notify you immediately if anything looks suspicious. With the right measures in place, you can protect yourself from card cracking and other card scams like carding.
