What Is a CISO and What Do They Do?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

With cyberattacks on the rise, the role of a CISO is expanding from protecting data to predicting and preventing all types of cyber threats.

Not so long ago, a CISO’s primary role was limited to the IT department where their task was taking care of the organization’s most valuable asset, its data. However, with the ever-evolving cyber-threat landscape, CISOs had to adjust their strategies and stay ahead of the curve.

Apart from planning and implementing an effective cybersecurity strategy for an entire organization, a CISO is also expected to coordinate everything with the organization’s business goals and keep an eye on the everyday operations of the security staff.

With so many responsibilities on their shoulders, it’s no surprise CISOs are among the most sought-after cybersecurity experts nowadays.

What Is a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)?

Among data protection professionals, this C-level executive is considered to be second to none. As a rule, they answer directly to the organization’s chief executive officer (CEO).

As their title suggests, a CISO plays a crucial role in planning and putting into practice information security infrastructure meant to protect an organization’s data and other assets. A critical set of skills for any CISO includes their ability to identify, analyze, and assess risks and take immediate action to employ an effective security solution.

Apart from the CEO, a CISO works in close collaboration with the chief technology officer (CTO) and chief information officer (CIO) to ensure every stage of their security strategy runs smoothly. Also, they make certain that organizations’ day-to-day operations don’t compromise overall security.

With so many things that can go wrong, the job of CISO can be nerve-wracking. Still, if you’re looking to work in cybersecurity, you’ll want to consider the essential skills you need to be successful in cybersecurity.

What Does a CISO Do?

Although the role of CISO is constantly changing, the core parts they play in an organization have stayed the same:

  • Assessing the organization’s information security infrastructure and risk management.
  • Keeping up with important cybersecurity statistics and trends, and introducing new technologies into the organization’s cybersecurity program.
  • Planning and implementing security processes and systems meant to prevent, identify, and recover from cyberattacks.
  • Overseeing the day-to-day work of the organization’s security staff.
  • Coordinating the response and recovery procedure in case of security breaches.
  • Evaluating cybersecurity’s current and future needs, and justifying the investments.
  • Regularly reporting to the organization’s CEO and other C-suite executives.

To put it simply, a CISO connects the core areas in any security-conscious organization—its security staff, the most efficient security technology, and the upper management—to strengthen its security risk posture.

Where Does CISO’s Role Fit in Today?

Well, since their responsibilities are increasing and their role has become more impactful than ever before, CISOs aren’t going away anytime soon.

On the contrary, as organizations continue to depend on technology and collect more data, the demand for such dedicated security experts can only grow.

What’s more, as cyber threats are constantly evolving and becoming more sophisticated, the role of the CISO is shifting from an operational level to a strategic one—in short, they’re becoming more involved in organizations themselves.
