TikTok to Automatically Set 60-Minute Limit for Teens

TikTok to Automatically Set 60-Minute Limit for Teens

Reading Time: 2 minutes

TikTok has announced new limits and features aimed at teens and families.

TikTok will automatically set a 60-minute daily time limit for users under the age of 18, the company says. The move is part of efforts to improve the digital wellness of young people on the app.

TikTok Adds 60-Minute Time Limit for Teens

TikTok announced the news on 1 March 2023 in a press release on the TikTok Newsroom. The change is set to be implemented in the ‘coming weeks’, according to the company.

In the post, Cormac Keenan, Head of Trust and Safety at TikTok said:

‘In the coming weeks, every account belonging to a user below age 18 will automatically be set to a 60-minute daily screen time limit.’

However, users will be able to opt out of the limit. Though if they do this, TikTok will prompt teens to set their own daily screen time limit if they spend more than 100 minutes on the app per day.

So what happens when users reach their limit? For teens between 13 and 18 years old, they will be able to enter a passcode to continue watching. TikTok says this requires them to make an active decision to continue using the app.

For those using the ‘under 13 experience’, a parent or guardian will need to enter a passcode to allow 30 minutes of additional watch time on the app.

You can manually limit your screen time in TikTok, but the new policy sets an automatic setting for the accounts of young users.

In addition to this, TikTok is rolling out new features to its Family Pairing tool. These include custom daily screen time limits, a screen time dashboard, and the ability to mute notifications for teens.

TikTok Wants Teens to Think About Their Time on the App

The new features are aimed at making teens and their caregivers more aware of the time they spend on the app, and curb it where necessary. However, there’s also the option to opt-out if young users are not keen on the automatic limit.
