The Out-of-Touch Adults’ Guide to Kid Culture: What Is a ‘Tradwife Influencer’?

The Out-of-Touch Adults’ Guide to Kid Culture: What Is a ‘Tradwife Influencer’?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Creepy politicians and fake restaurants are also what’s up this week.

Hypocrisy and politicians have always gone hand-in-Satan’s hoof, but lately, young people’s acceptance of transgender people and non-traditional sexuality is slamming hard against the wall of scared, old conservative dudes with power, and things are getting very strange. But there is hope. Or #hopecore, anyway.

Old, white, conservative politicians are weird

Maybe the defining characteristic of Generation Y is its rejection of gender and sexuality classifications. From the outside, it can seem like everyone younger than a certain age is bisexual, or trans, or some not-quite-defined microsexuality that you’ve never heard of. It’s all very fluid, and younger people, gay, straight, or whatever, don’t seem to care. To many older people though, this can all seem weird, if not sinister. What happened to the good old days of rigidly enforcing arbitrary definitions of abstract social constructs? What happened to traditional values?

Recently, the hypocrisy of a handful of conservative politicians and commentators has perfectly illustrated the wisdom of youth, and how the self-hatred that came with those ‘traditional values’ can twist people into monsters. These are actual the weird people, but because they have the power, they’re also dangerous.

  • Randy McNally: Aptly named Randy McNally is the 79 year-old Lt. Governor of Tennessee. According to his office, the great-grandfather is a ‘prolific social media commenter’ and one of the social medias he comments upon prolifically is an Instagram account belonging to Franklyn McClur. McClur is an openly gay, makeup-wearing 20 year-old dude who posts very racy pictures and videos of himself. McNally likes leaving him comments like ‘super look’ and showering him with heart and flame emojis, and he’s been doing it for a long time. There’s nothing wrong with an old horndog thirsting for a younger guy online, but McNally has a long legislative history of supporting anti-LGBT+ legislation, including a particularly noxious anti-trans bill that’s recently become law—a law that makes public drag performances felonies. So this Randy guy is sending fucking heart emojis to someone at night, while simultaneously working to have people like his Insta crush imprisoned during the day.
  • Bill Lee: Tennessee Governor Bill Lee doesn’t leave thirsty comments for Instagram models (that we know about) but he did sign a bill into law criminalizing drag performances in Tennessee, though there are pictures of him in drag. But don’t worry, it was a ‘lighthearted school tradition’ when Lee did it, so it’s OK. In fact, even bringing it up is ‘disrespectful to Tennessee families.’ If you try it, though? They’ll throw away the key.
  • Nate Schatzline: A Texas Republican legislator from Fort Worth, Nate Schatzline wrote House Bill 1266, which aims to ban drag shows in the state. According to the bill, a drag performance is ‘any performance in which a performer exhibits a gender identity that is different than the performer’s gender assigned at birth using clothing, makeup, or other physical markers and sings, lip syncs, dances, or otherwise performs before an audience for entertainment.’ Then this video surfaced, depicting Schatzline, assigned the gender ‘male’ at birth, performing while wearing a dress, presumably for someone’s entertainment. Since he can’t deny it’s him, Schatzline attempted to explain away the video by saying that he was wearing a dress to be funny, because his friends dared him to. His bill, however, makes no distinction for cross-dressers who were dared by their friends. In Schatzline’s defense, his video stands as the least funny drag performance I have ever seen.
  • Michael Knowles: At last week’s Reich Party Congress in Nuremberg, wait, I mean, Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland, commentator Michael Knowles proclaimed ‘transgenderism must be eradicated’ to great applause from the crowd. So of course there are pictures of him in drag. Video too. Knowles hasn’t publicly responded, but he’d probably say something like, ‘Yes, I was wearing a dress, but I was mocking Elizabeth Warren! I was also mocking native Americans! So it’s legal!’ That’s what’s really going on here: No one is trying to outlaw men dressing in women’s clothing as long as your motivation is to mock and belittle women.

The rise of ‘tradwives’

It’s not just old white guys who are questioning the whole ‘tolerance’ thing. There’s a growing subculture of young women online asking, ‘why don’t we all just get back in the kitchen?’ They call themselves ‘tradwives,’ and they’re creepy.

Estee Williams is a typical tradwife influencer. She posts pictures and videos of herself baking and cleaning while her husband is presumably at work in a 1950s advertising agency. ‘I put my husband’s wants ahead of my own, and this has done nothing but benefit myself and my marriage,’ reports Williams.

Williams can live whatever kinky lifestyle she chooses, but some tradwives are connected to white supremacists, and even if they’re not, it’s still gross and underhanded. They’re making a disingenuous argument in favor of a post-war lifestyle that barely even existed, was only open to relatively rich, white people, and was based on oppression and the patriarchy anyway. Luckily, the comment sections are full of ‘girl, you’re nuts’ takes.

#Hopecore takes over TikTok

Let’s clear our minds of political unpleasantness with some #hopecore. This rapidly growing sub-genre of TikTok video reminds us that the world isn’t solely made up of hypocritical politicians and creepy anti-feminists. There are also moments of joy, compassion, and triumph worth celebrating. String a few together in a video and you end up with #hopecore. Yes, it’s cringe, but so is having hope. Embrance the cringe.

Viral video of the week: The deceptive world of ghost kitchens

During the pandemic, I was the victim of a delivery app ‘ghost kitchen,’ and I will never forgive myself. I knew there wasn’t a restaurant called ‘Ramona’s Tacos’ .3 miles from my house, but I ordered from there anyway. The place looked good on the app—it looked legit—maybe I just hadn’t noticed it.

The burrito I received was serviceable but boring, like something from a cafeteria. I was momentarily puzzled, but it didn’t inspire me to look into how this strange burrito came to be delivered to my living room. YouTuber Eddy Burback did though. In his video ‘The deceptive world of ghost kitchens,’ Burback takes a dive deep into Instacart, grubhub, and the rest and returns with a weirder, more dystopian, and more depressing story than anything I imagined. Not to spoil it, but everything is a racket, everyone is trying to con you, nothing is genuine, and things are only going to get worse. Also: The burger you order from ‘Meaty Wow! Burgers!’ on that app could have come from IHOP, and you’d never know.
