Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have a very impressive Pokédex of over 400 Pokémon. And something about the exploration of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet makes completing your Pokédex seem more appealing than ever.

But not all Pokémon evolve by simply leveling up. Some require more interesting techniques to unlock their final forms. So save yourself the EXP candies you’ve been mindlessly feeding to your ‘mons to boost them to the next level because that might not do the trick! Here are all the special evolutions in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Pokémon That Evolve via Trade in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

When a Pokémon doesn’t evolve via level-up, there are a plethora of other things you can try. One of the methods used to evolve Pokémon is by trading them with a friend. Just make sure you’re trading with someone you trust will trade your precious Pokémon back!

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet came under fire upon their release due to performance issues. These issues are most prevalent when you’ve been playing for a long period of time, or when playing online. There are some quick tips to improve your Pokémon Scarlet and Violet performance issues before embarking on any trades, but the first thing you should do to improve gameplay is ensure you have updated Pokémon Scarlet and Violet to the latest version.

Here are the Pokémon that evolve via trade in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet:

  • Haunter – Gengar.
  • Scyther + Metal Coat – Scizor.
  • Slowpoke + Kings Rock – Slowking.

Pokémon like Haunter simply need to be traded to unlock their evolution, but Scyther and Slowpoke need to be holding the items mentioned above in order to evolve.

Pokémon That Evolve With Stones in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Pokémon evolving with a stone has always been an important part of the Pokémon lore, and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are no exception. You may recognize some of these evolutions from previous Pokémon games, but others, such as Leafeon and Glaceon’s stone evolutions, are unique to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

You can find all the stones you need from Delibird Presents or by finding them on the ground throughout your adventures.

Pokémon That Evolve With Certain Items in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Some Pokémon need to be holding a particular item to trigger their evolutions. Once you have given the following Pokémon their corresponding items, you will need to level them up just once to evolve them.

  • Applin: Sweet Apple = Appleton OR Tart Apple = Flapple.

You can purchase the Sweet Apple or Tart Apple from Delibird Presents.

  • Charcadet: Auspicious Armor = Armarogue OR Malicious Armor = Ceruledge.

You can get these items by completing the side quest in Zapapico where an NPC requests 10 Sinistea Chips. Auspicious Armor is unique to Pokémon Scarlet, and Malicious Armor is unique to Pokémon Violet.

  • Gimmighoul: 999 Gimmighoul Coins = Gholdengo.

You can collect Gimmighoul coins by finding Gimmighoul hidden around Paldea, or by catching or fighting Gimmighoul Chests.

  • Sinistea: Antique version + Chipped Pot = Polteageist OR Phony version + Cracked Pot = Polteageist.

You can tell if your Sinistea is a Phony or Antique version by checking its Pokédex entry or by looking for a blue sticker on the bottom of the cup. If the blue sticker is present, your Sinistea is an Antique. You can get the Chipped or Cracked Pots from the Auction House or by finding them throughout your adventures.

Pokémon That Evolve by Learning a Certain Move in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Some Pokémon need to learn a certain move to evolve. If you passed on teaching your Pokémon its evolution move at the time, you can reteach it to your Pokémon from within your Pokémon’s summary menu.

  • Bonsly + Mimic (level 16) = Sudowoodo.
  • Dunsparce + Hyper Drill (level 32) = Dudunsparce.
  • Eevee + high friendship level + any Fairy move = Sylveon.
  • Girafarig + Twin Beam (level 32) = Farigiraf.
  • Primeape + use Rage Fist 20 times in battle = Annihilape.
  • Steenee + Stomp (level 28) Tsareena.

If you have retaught your Pokémon one of these moves, level it up once to trigger its evolution.

Pokémon That Evolve at a Certain Time of Day in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

If you’ve been struggling to evolve a certain Pokémon, you might need to level it up at a particular time of day. Many of these Pokémon may also require another variable to trigger their evolution.

  • Eevee + Friendship + Day = Espeon OR Night = Umbreon.
  • Fromantis + Level 34 + Day = Lurantis.
  • Greavard + Level 30 + Night = Houndstone.
  • Happiny + Oval Stone + Day + one level up = Chansey.
  • Riolu + Friendship + Day = Lucario.
  • Rockruff + Level 25 + Day = Midday Form.
  • Rockruff + Level 25 + Night = Midnight Form.
  • Rockruff + Level 25 + Own Tempo ability + Night = Dusk Form.
  • Sligoo + Level 51 + Raining = Goodra.
  • Sneasel + Razor Claw item + Night = Weaville.
  • Yungoos + Level 20 + Day = Gumshoos.

If you’ve reached the time of day needed to evolve any of the above Pokémon, but you’re not close to levelling up, giving your Pokémon an EXP candy to get it to the next level works just as well.

Pokémon That Evolve via Friendship in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

The following Pokémon need a high level of friendship to evolve.

  • Azurill – Marill.
  • Chansey – Blissey.
  • Eevee – Espeon OR Umbreon OR Sylveon.
  • Igglybuff – Jiglypuff.
  • Pichu – Pikachu.
  • Riolu – Lucario.

Once these Pokémon’s friendship level is high enough, they will still need to level up to trigger their evolution. You can raise a Pokémon’s friendship level by battling with them, carrying them in your party, walking with them using the Let’s Go feature, and making sure they don’t die in battle.

Pokémon That Evolve Using the Let’s Go Feature in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

The Pokémon Scarlet and Violet games introduced a brand-new form of evolution using the Let’s Go feature. This feature can also be used to hatch eggs to breed Pokémon or when you’re shiny hunting in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. You can go walking with the first Pokémon in your party by pressing the R button when you’re in the overworld. Once you’ve walked with the following Pokémon enough, they will evolve the next time they level up.

  • Bramblin – Brambleghast.
  • Pawmo – Pawmot.
  • Rellor – Rabsca.

You need to walk at least 1000 steps with these Pokémon. This isn’t hard, but they do have to be uninterrupted steps. That means that if you enter a battle or if your Pokémon goes back into its Poké Ball for whatever reason, the meter is reset, and you have to start all over again.

With This Guide, You Will Complete Your Paldean Pokédex in No Time

There are so many creative and different ways to evolve your Pokémon these days that it’s hard to know where to start. Hopefully, this guide has helped you figure out what Pokémon need a little extra treatment and what ones don’t, so you can complete your Pokédex.
