The 6 Best Dual-Motor EVs Currently for Sale

EVs are rapid. Want to go faster than anything else? Buy a dual-motor EV.

The choice of buying an electric vehicle isn’t so simple. Some electric vehicles only use one electric motor to power either the front or rear axle, but there are also EVs with two or even three motors.

The point of adding more electric motors is to increase power and also add AWD in many cases. Some of the best-performance EVs on the market feature a dual-motor design.

1. Tesla Model 3 Performance

The Model 3 is probably the electric vehicle most responsible for catapulting EVs toward mainstream popularity. Unfortunately, it also features dual electric motors, and like most Tesla vehicles, this thing is an absolute monster of a performance EV.

Compared to the RWD Model 3, the dual-motor version demolishes its stablemate in terms of performance. The RWD Model 3 takes its time on the way to 60 MPH, completing the sprint from zero in a leisurely 5.8 seconds.

But, the Model 3 Performance (with its dual-motor setup) completes the run in a blinding 3.1 seconds. The obvious benefits of adding a second motor are the added power plus the ability to explode off the line thanks to AWD courtesy of adding a motor at the front.

Adding insult to injury, the dual-motor Model 3 Performance also gets 315 miles of range versus 272 miles for the RWD model. In the world of electric motors, more is definitely better.

But, the dual-motor Performance will sting your wallet to the tune of $53,990, while the RWD model comes in at $10,000 cheaper. The Performance is significantly more expensive, but if you want a true menace of an EV, the choice is clear.

2. BMW i4 M50

The BMW i4 M50 is BMW’s response to the Model 3 Performance, and in typical BMW fashion, it’s also about $10,000 more expensive than the Tesla. It’s also slower to 60 MPH, completing the run in 3.7 seconds.

Also, in typical German EV tradition, you get less range than the less expensive Tesla, with the BMW topping out at 270 miles. This range discrepancy isn’t as bad as in the Porsche Taycan Turbo S vs. Tesla Model S Plaid, but you’re still getting less range for more money.

Regardless, the i4 M50 is a dual-motor BMW that is quick as hell in its own right and will destroy most other vehicles on the road; just make sure to stay away from any Teslas.

BMW says the twin electric motors will put out 536 horsepower, and the car can regain up to 97 miles of range with the proper DC fast charger in 10 minutes.

If you’re into the hate-it or love-it BMW styling, this is the car for you. However, it’s still a bit of a head-scratcher that BMW opted for the huge grille look up front, especially because this is an EV.

Other than the controversial front end, the car is very beautiful and arguably much more attractive than a Model 3. The interior is also a wonderful place to be and gives off a cozy vibe that the clinical Model 3 interior can’t replicate.

3. Hyundai IONIQ 5

The IONIQ 5 is the best-looking EV on the road. Its design looks straight out of a concept car rendering, and the retro-futuristic look is spot on. In addition, awesome styling cues abound in the car’s design, especially the cool pixel theme throughout the vehicle’s exterior and above all, the awesome taillights.

Not only does the IONIQ 5 look cool, but it’s also an amazing performer, thanks to the availability of a dual-motor setup. The dual-motor version of the IONIQ 5 produces 320 horsepower from its dual electric motors.

This might not seem like much compared to some Tesla models, but with the instant torque of the dual electric motors, it will definitely push you back in your seat.

If that’s not enough, you’ll have to wait for the N version of the IONIQ 5, which should provide performance along the lines of the super quick Kia EV6 GT.

Hyundai has really stepped up its efforts when it comes to EVs, and it’s great to see that it’s not all about making appliance-like electric vehicles; it wants to stand out from the sea of incoming EVs.

4. Tesla Model S

The all-conquering Model S Plaid usually steals the show whenever the conversation turns to a Tesla sedan, but the non-Plaid Model S is a beast of a performer in its own right.

Tesla’s insane Plaid super-sedan uses three electric motors to kick up the fun, but don’t forget that the regular Model S might be the best deal in the entire Tesla lineup.

The non-Plaid Model S features dual-motor power, so you know the performance is outstanding. It can complete the sprint from 0-60 MPH in a supercar-quick 3.1 seconds.

The fact that the Plaid can complete the 0-60 MPH run in 1.99 seconds is somewhat irrelevant when the regular Model S is already blindingly quick. The regular Model S also delivers 405 miles of range for $20,000 less than the Plaid.

In the real world, the difference in performance between the tri-motor configuration and the dual-motor definitely won’t be worth the price hike. Both vehicles have beautiful, minimalist interiors that are a huge step up from older Model S cars.

The Model S used to be offered in a RWD setup, but at the moment, the only options are dual-motor or tri-motor versions.

5. Kia EV6 GT

Kia wasn’t kidding around when they introduced the EV6 GT. This sporty EV delivers 576 horsepower from its dual electric motors via grippy AWD. If you’re looking for an electric vehicle that stands out from the crowd while also delivering performance that will blow supercars out of the water, the Kia EV6 GT is perfect.

Kia has added some serious performance into the EV6 GT, and it can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 3.4 seconds. Yes, that is blindingly quick, just in case you were wondering.

6. VW ID.4

The VW ID.4 is a super practical, electrified SUV ideal for the entire family. The ID.4 AWD Pro can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 5.7 seconds and only experiences a 20-mile hit on its total range compared to the RWD model.

If you go for the RWD ID.4 Pro, it will do 275 miles on a full charge. But the AWD version can do 255, which isn’t a big difference. VW has also outfitted the ID.4 with a beautiful interior, so you can enjoy the AWD dual-motor experience from the lap of luxury.

Dual Motors Add Tons of Performance to EVs

Buyers can be confused at first in regard to the benefits of adding a second electric motor. But, the benefits extend beyond simply adding AWD. In an EV, AWD comes with extra power due to the extra motor added to another axle.

This guarantees better performance off the line, as well as superior torque and passing power.
