Samsung Galaxy Unpacked February 2023: Here’s Everything That Was Announced

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Samsung just unveiled its best phones and laptops for 2023.

The spotlight was on San Francisco on February 1, 2023, as Samsung held its first Unpacked event since the Pandemic. Rather than focusing on what the world has been through, Samsung concentrated on the future by showing off its flagship products.

Much of the event was focused on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 series of phones, especially the S23’s camera capabilities. We’ll get to that in a moment, but first, let’s look at an overview of the Galaxy S23.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Series: Cost, Models, Availability

The Samsung event was primarily devoted to the Galaxy S23 series—no surprise considering there’s plenty to talk about, starting with the release date: February 17, 2023, with pre-orders going live on February 1, 2023.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is available in three models:

If you’re a Samsung Galaxy fan and want to get your hands on one (or all) of these smartphones as soon as possible, then you should place your orders on the Galaxy S23 pre-order page.

Galaxy S23 Series’ Emphasis on the Camera

Now, what about that amazing camera Samsung keeps talking about? We’ll give you a buzzword they used: the ‘Nightography’ function. That AI-powered ISP algorithm makes photos you snap in the dark look radiant. Intrigued? So were we.

Since we’re talking about AI here, let’s talk about another AI-powered photography function they discussed in detail: the ‘AI Stereo Depth Map’ powered by an ‘AI object-aware engine.’ Samsung emphasized that the Galaxy S23 can detect and enhance objects via AI Stereo Depth Map and the AI object-aware engine.

They demonstrated the technologies via a group shot in a dark office where the light and shadows play well with the objects and people in the image. Samsung’s AI engine made the photo look clear and vibrant rather than dull, dark, and muddied; seriously impressive.

The S23 series features pro-grade cameras with three lenses. Both the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ sport a 50MP camera, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra packs a wallop with a 200MP camera. As for the front cameras, all three models have a 12MP camera.

The Galaxy S23 supports a Super HDR 12-bit dynamic of colors, allowing light and dark shades to be depicted more accurately. ‘Quad-pixel binding’ is also on the menu: a technique combining 16 pixels into one to make pictures look naturally brighter and vibrant, specifically in low light conditions.

When recording video footage, you get an impressive 60 frames per second, recorded in 4K on both the back and front cameras. Each model also supports 8K recording at 30 frames per second. Awesome!

The S23’s Performance Under the Hood

Samsung also emphasized at Unpacked 2023 that the Galaxy S23 is ideal for gaming. It sports a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor—the fastest Snapdragon yet. The Galaxy S23 needed this chip, considering that ray tracing is supported on the Galaxy S23.

And it’s no gimmick, either. Samsung showed a side-by-side comparison of a game running without ray tracing and with ray tracing on the Galaxy S23, and the difference was literally night and day.

Samsung also improved the brightness of the Galaxy S series. Its peak brightness is 1750 nits, making it easier to view your screen outdoors.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra sports a 6.8-inch AMOLED display (6.6-inches for the S23+ and 6.1-inches for the S23), a 5,000mAh battery (4,700mAh for the S23+, 3,900mAh for the S23), and Super Fast Charging 2.0 on both the S23 Ultra and S23+. Unfortunately, the base S23 model only supports Super Fast charging.

Security and Convenience in Mind

Maintenance mode—the convenient way to secure your phone before getting repairs—returns in the Galaxy S23. It’s complemented by Samsung’s Knox security protection, making the Galaxy S23’s new security and privacy features better than ever.

Users can quickly see which apps can access their data and how it’s being used. The S23 will also receive four years of OS upgrades and five years of security updates.

Samsung also unveiled the One UI 5.1 and its overhauled Notes app that supports note-taking and editing via the Samsung S Pen. Moreover, you can collaborate with others in real-time in the Notes app and integrate them into Google Meet. Color us intrigued.

And although it may be years away, Google, Samsung, and Qualcomm announced at the show that they are teaming up to build a VR/AR/XR platform. There’s no way of knowing what this could be, but we’ll let you know our thoughts as we learn more.

Galaxy Book 3 Series Was Equally Impressive

Samsung also unveiled its latest Galaxy Book device, the Galaxy Book3. Samsung’s top-end laptop comes in four flavors:

  • Samsung Galaxy Book3 360
  • Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 360
  • Samsung Galaxy Book3 Ultra

The Galaxy Book3 can be pre-ordered today, except for the Galaxy Book3 Ultra, which can be purchased with ‘early access.’ It will be available for pre-order on February 14, 2023, with an unknown estimated delivery date as of this time. When we get an update, we will let you know.

Will the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy Book3 Live Up to the Hype?

Thanks to Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google’s mixed-reality announcement, Samsung gave us something to be excited about in 2023 and the future. The Galaxy S23 looks like another winner in Samsung’s legacy line of Galaxy smartphones, and the Galaxy Book3 breathes new life into Samsung’s Galaxy Book line of devices.

Samsung was in fine form at Unpacked 2023, and we’re excited by what the year has in store for one of the world’s largest electronic manufacturers.
