Review of the Redmagic 8 Pro Gaming Smartphone

Reading Time: 5 minutes

I was searching for a smartphone that would allow me to play the most sophisticated and demanding games while maintaining a temperature low enough to ensure its processor could run continuously at its maximum speed.

Apart from myself and one oddball nephew, my family members are proud iPhone owners. I understand their reasoning; these lightweight and well-designed smartphones take advantage of Apple's vast ecosystem.

An iPhone's only drawbacks are its premium price, and Apple's tendency to subscribe to the one size fits all concept.

It's a little different in the Android world. While this type of phone can be expensive, plenty of decent options are available at a reasonable price.

Android's other advantage revolves around utility. If you have a specific use for a phone, there is probably one available that exactly fits your needs.

Last year I reviewed a bulky Android smartphone that weighed almost 13 ounces. Although this phone is not for everyone, tradesmen and contractors appreciate its extremely loud speaker and its ability to withstand shock, water, and dust. Avid outdoorsmen love its built-in infrared camera.

Today I am reviewing another niche smartphone. This one is designed to attract the attention of the ardent gamer who demands a device equipped with the hardware and software necessary to completely overwhelm their opponents.

Physical Description

Two versions of the Redmagic 8 Pro are available, each equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and Nubia's dedicated gaming chip, Red Core 2.

A competent ICE 11 Multi-Dimensional Cooling System copes with the heat produced when running the phone's processor at gaming speed. This cooling system, however, slightly increases this device's weight and thickness. My Void smartphone, when its phone cover is fitted, weighs 245 grams, is 11 millimeters thick, 7.9 centimeters wide, and 16.8 centimeters tall.

The Matte smartphone is equipped with 12GB of ram and 256GB of storage. My Void test sample included 16GB of ram and 512GB of storage.

These devices boast a True FHD + AMOLED 6.88-inch display with a 120Hz Screen Refresh Rate and a resolution of 2480 x 1116p. The screen features a multi-finger touch sampling rate of 960Hz and includes a second-generation Under-Display Camera.

This smartphone is powered by Android 13 and the Redmagic 6.0 operating system. It is fitted with a 6000mAh dual-cell battery that can be fully recharged in 43 minutes using 65W Fast Charging.

Additional features include a pair of 520 Hz Dual Shoulder Triggers, a 50-megapixel Samsung rear camera, colorful lighting effects, and compatibility with Bluetooth 5.3 and WiFi 7.

Design Philosophy

The Redmagic 8 Pro is a smartphone focused on providing enthusiasts with a fast and effective gaming platform. Its glass and aluminum composition is attractive without appearing flashy.

Game Space

Game Space is a mode developed to control game notifications and tweak performance. While many games will automatically select this mode, it can also be activated by pushing a slider on the right-hand edge of the phone.

The Processor

A Qualcomm SM8550 Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 LPDDR5X + UFS 4.0 chipset provides a CPU clock speed of up to 3.19GHz. A substantial amount of RAM aids this processor's performance.

Like the previous generation of this chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 focuses on improving power efficiency. This should result in less heat and longer battery life.

The ICE 11.0 Multi-dimensional Cooling System

When playing a fast-paced game, the smartphone's CPU works exceptionally hard. This results in heat buildup, which eventually forces the CPU to decelerate, allowing the temperature to moderate. Often this necessary but unfortunate event will occur within a battle, limiting the player's ability to counter an attack.

This phone's cooling system ensures the device and its processor maintain a moderate temperature, well below the crucial point overheating impacts gameplay.

A turbofan supports the ICE 11.0 Multi-dimensional Cooling System. This fan can reach speeds of 20,000rpm, providing constant airflow.

The 11-layer cooling system consists of a graphene heat storage plate, VC heat dissipation plate, air aluminum box, turbofan, high heat rare earth, conducting gel, copper coil, heat dissipation plate, air duct, protective case, and turbo cooler. An additional layer of protective graphene is placed beneath the smartphone's display.

A Bright Display

The 6.8-inch multi-touch AMOLED panel boasts a resolution of FHD+ 2480 x 1116 pixels. Brightness can be adjusted to a maximum of 1300 nits. This is double the brightness level achievable by the Redmagic 7S Pro and results in the ability to display clear and readable images in dazzling sunlight.

Refresh rates may be set at 60, 90, or 120hz. Higher refresh rates allow smoother gaming while consuming more power.

This phone boasts a touch sampling rate of 960Hz. When paired with the 520Hz shoulder triggers, the display responds quickly and fluidly to touch.

Viewing angle, color, and detail are excellent, whether the user is playing a game or streaming a movie.

Audio

The onboard speakers work effectively, with plenty of volume while reproducing sound well. However, I find that when listening to music, I prefer to connect my Bluetooth open earbuds.

Primary Camera

This device is fitted with a Samsung GN5 50MB main, 8MP wide angle, and 2MP macro camera. The rainy winter weather interfered with my ability to snap test photos, but not every day can be sunny. I was especially impressed by the macro camera's ability to take clear shots of water droplets clinging to twigs and elderly berries.

Selfie Camera

This 16MP camera's lens is hidden beneath the display, allowing an uninterrupted view of the gaming battlefield. While the resulting image is not quite as good as one taken using a typically positioned front camera, this camera's selfie photos are a significant improvement over those taken by the Redmagic 7S Pro.

The Battery

Although its dual-cell non-removable Li-Po 6000mAh battery is slightly larger than the power cell fitted to the Redmagic 7S Pro, its operating time is slightly less. This is probably because I keep the screen of the Redmagic 8 Pro at a brighter level than is possible with the older phone. I do love a bright screen.

Recharging time is quite impressive. This phone can be fully recharged in less than three-quarters of an hour.

Overall Impression

Although I am not a hardcore gamer, I did spend a pleasant afternoon playing Call of Duty. The game ran smoothly, and due to an effective cooling system, there were no embarrassing instances where an overheated processor slowed my response to danger. I lost every game I played, but the blame lies squarely with me!

The speedy processor and abundant RAM ensure that non-game-related tasks can also be completed quickly and without quirks. The cooling system allows safe Fast Charging, and the processor/RAM combination provides the ability to run several applications simultaneously without a loss of speed. The Redmagic 8 Pro Smartphone is recommended.
