LockBit Ransomware Gang Claims Royal Mail Attack

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The LockBit ransomware gang has claimed the Royal Mail cyberattack and is threatening to leak stolen data.

Russian-based ransomware gang LockBit has claimed responsibility for the Royal Mail cyberattack. The group has also threatened to leak the data stolen from the Royal Mail in the attack.

LockBit Claims the Huge Royal Mail Cyberattack

On January 11, 2023, British delivery service Royal Mail suffered a severe ransomware attack which resulted in the temporary shutdown of international shipping operations. At the time of writing, the organization is still struggling to fully recover, though it has resumed its international shipping services.

While LockBit, a Russian-linked ransomware gang, initially denied that it was responsible for the Royal Mail attack (as reported by Bleeping Computer), blaming a prominent affiliate, it has now confirmed that it was, in fact, directly behind the operation.

LockBit Threatens a Data Leak

In a note posted to the official LockBit forum, the gang threatened to leak the data collected in the January attack, and the Royal Mail has been added to its list of victims on the site. As shown in the Tweet above, posted by Brett Callow, the group clarified that ‘ALL AVAILABLE DATA WILL BE PUBLISHED’.

The group stated that the data would be leaked on Thursday, February 9, at 03:42 AM UTC. It is not yet known whether LockBit has demanded a specific ransom amount from the Royal Mail.

LockBit Is a Prominent Ransomware Threat

LockBit currently stands as one of the most dangerous ransomware gangs in operation today. Not only has the gang itself carried out numerous attacks in the past, but its ransomware-as-a-service platform allows any paying customer to use its ransomware in their own malicious ventures.

LockBit’s most recent ransomware iteration, LockBit 3.0, can also exfiltrate (or withdraw) data as well as encrypt it, giving it even more dangerous and damaging capabilities.

Time Will Tell Whether the Royal Mail Pays a Ransom

At the moment, the Royal Mail seems to be remaining tight-lipped on the LockBit situation and has not disclosed how it wishes to proceed. More details may emerge about the conclusion of this attack in the near future, particularly if LockBit does decide to leak the stolen data.
