BeReal is one of the newest social media platforms out there that reached millions of downloads in 2022 and threatened giants like TikTok and Instagram, which both made copycat BeReal features on their own platforms. But is BeReal shaping up to be the next social media giant or is it already dying after a little over a year in peak popularity?
How BeReal Rose So Quickly
BeReal was first created back in 2019, but quickly gained steam in early 2022. People fell in love with the authenticity angle that became the platform’s whole schtick, and many easily became active everyday users. Users can only post once per day on the app and the atmosphere of it is very casual.
The idea of posting once per day at a moment chosen by the app made it so that users had to post whatever they were doing at the time. This is very different from apps like Instagram where users feel pressure to post carefully curated photo dumps and even photoshopped images that take a lot of time and effort to engage in. BeReal is easy and authentic.
The platform also gained a lot of attention due to TikTok trends surrounding it that caused even more people to download BeReal just to see what the hype was about. BeReal itself has a very active TikTok account to promote itself.
Is BeReal Already Dying?
Despite reaching 53 million downloads in 2022, only 9% of users are active every day, according to Sensor Tower. For an app where one post per day is kind of its whole thing, this low percentage could be a sign that people are growing bored with it.
There have been a lot of social media apps that hit high popularity then quickly fell, and BeReal may just be another statistic.
If the notification that it is ‘Time to BeReal’ comes at a time where you are doing something fun, then the app itself is also fun. However, if you find yourself, like many others, taking BeReals at your work desk every day, then you are probably not getting the most out of BeReal.
However, the authenticity of the platform and the fact that it is one of the only platforms where you aren’t bombarded by ads, still brings millions of users to BeReal every day. TikTok and Instagram are also both still running and perfecting their copycat features: Instagram Candid Stories and TikTok Now.
This gives BeReal a good chance of sticking around longer than the trendy social media apps of the past, especially as it grows and improves upon itself.
How BeReal Can Avoid Being Just a Trend
BeReal needs to avoid the monotony that many people experience with posting once per day, while still being an authentic platform that stays clear of careful content curation that users dislike about other platforms.
Features like Realmojis keep BeReal unique and separate it from copycats like TikTok Now. The platform should emphasize features like this to stay relevant and engaging.
BeReal also experienced crashes and glitches in 2022 which it needs to keep updating and repairing, so that users don’t become frustrated with using the app. With competing features on social media giants now, it will be easier for BeReal to lose its user base if the app is not easy to use.
Is BeReal Here to Stay?
BeReal is still a relatively new social media outlet, so it is hard to predict how much longer it will stay popular. One thing is for certain: BeReal will have to keep working and keeping up with what users are looking for if it wants to stay relevant.
