How to Play Relaxing Background Sounds on Your Mac

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Use this accessibility feature on your Mac to stay focused, fall asleep, or just relax.

Ambient noise is the best way to separate yourself from the outside world to focus on work, put yourself to sleep or simply stay calm. If you’ve been using third-party apps for white noise on your Mac so far, it’s time you get rid of them.

With macOS Ventura, Apple introduced a new feature called Background Sounds. If you’re having a hard time finding this feature, don’t worry. This guide will show you how to enable background sounds on your Mac.

How to Play Background Sounds on Mac

Background sounds debuted in iOS 15’s accessibility settings, allowing you to play background sounds on iPhone. Similarly, you can also enable them on your Mac from Accessibility settings. Follow these simple instructions to do so:

  1. Open System Settings on your Mac.
  2. Navigate to Accessibility > Audio.
  3. Turn on the toggle next to the Background Sounds option.

Once enabled, you can click on the Choose button to select from six background sounds: Rain, Balanced Noise, Bright Noise, Dark Noise, Ocean, and Stream.

Furthermore, you can drag the volume slider below it to adjust the volume of background sounds.

Additionally, if you toggle on the Turn off background sounds when your Mac is not in use option, these background sounds will be disabled when you’re not actively using your computer.

These sounds aren’t pre-installed by default, but they’ll download automatically. If not, you can manually download them by clicking on the Download icon next to the sound.

Add Background Sounds to the Control Center

It can be a hassle going to Accessibility settings to turn on background sounds every time, especially if you use it often. Fortunately, you can add background sounds to the Control Center and access the feature quickly. Follow these steps to learn how:

  1. Open System Settings on your Mac.
  2. Select Control Center.
  3. Now, scroll down and toggle on the Show in Control Center option under the Hearing section.

Once added, you can easily access background sounds from the Control Center. All you have to do is open the Control Center, click the Hearing (ear) icon, and select Background Sounds to turn on ambient sounds.

Of course, you can remove it from the Control Center if you don’t like it. Here’s a detailed guide on how to customize your Mac’s Control Center and menu bar to help you.

Focus Better With Fewer Distractions

Background sounds in macOS Ventura might not be one of the most significant additions to the Mac. However, these background sounds can help you bring back your focus from distracting sounds, improving your productivity when working on your Mac.

Remember that macOS Ventura has a lot to offer, and this is just one of the hidden features it brings to the table. So, feel free to dive into the operating system to discover something new.
