How to Optimize PC Game Pass on a Lower-End PC

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Struggling to run PC Game Pass? We’ve got a few tips that should help optimize your PC’s performance.

A high-end gaming PC may be on every gamer’s wishlist, but it certainly isn’t in every gamer’s home. And with the speed at which games and technology, in general, are advancing, it is easy to feel left behind while you’re still chugging along with your lower-end PC.

But just because your PC isn’t powerful enough to run big-budget AAA games doesn’t mean you can’t have a great experience playing games on Game Pass, especially when you use these tips and workarounds to get Game Pass running smoothly on your low-end system.

1. Know Your PC’s Capabilities

The first step to figuring out how to make Xbox Game Pass run better on your PC is to know your system’s limits. This is going to help you out drastically as you will be able to see exactly which part of your PC is struggling and what areas need your help.

If your CPU is struggling the most, for example, you will know to close all background apps to take a load off your PC. Knowing exactly what areas your PC struggles in is handy knowledge to have as it allows you to cross-check a game’s system requirements to deduce whether they will work for you before you go through all the trouble of installing them on your PC.

Check your PC’s gaming performance by booting up your PC and playing a game on Game Pass. Then you can open up the Xbox Game Bar by pressing the Windows key and the G key at the same time. Toggle to Performance, and take a look at your PC’s stats.

2. Enable Game Mode on Your PC

Make sure Game Mode is enabled to get the best performance when playing Game Pass on your PC. Game Mode suspends any unnecessary activities that your PC may be running in the background, like installing drivers and sending reset notifications, for example.

When Game Mode is activated, your game will get your PC’s undivided attention, so it can produce a more stable frame rate and overall performance. To enable game mode on your PC, open your Settings. Head to Gaming, then navigate to Game Mode and ensure the switch is turned on.

3. Utilize Xbox Cloud Gaming to Play Xbox Game Pass on Your PC

If the above tips weren’t quite enough to fix your gaming woes, there are still a few other workarounds to get you gaming on your low-end PC. One of these options is to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and utilize the Cloud. Cloud gaming allows you to bypass your PC’s low specs completely by streaming the game from another location.

Cloud gaming does require a decent internet connection, but that is far easier to obtain for any gamer than the latest gaming PC. There is also a huge library of Cloud games available on Xbox Game Pass, so your gaming horizons won’t be limited.

If you had already been wondering whether upgrading to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is worth it, the fact that it brings console-level gaming within reach for low-end PC owners could be enough to twist your arm.

4. Play Xbox Game Pass on Your PC With Remote Play

Your PC may not be all that powerful, but if you’ve got an Xbox Series X|S, that certainly is. One of the Xbox’s most valuable features is Remote Play.

Remote Play is kind of like cloud gaming, but you are streaming the game from your very own console rather than from a server somewhere else. Remote Play allows you to pick up and play all your favorite console games from any other compatible device, even your low-end PC.

Since Remote Play utilizes the specs of the console rather than whatever device you’re playing it on, you could play it on a potato and there is a good chance it would still run. You can also stream Xbox games to Android using Remote Play, and a whole host of other devices.

Get the Best of Both Worlds and Play Xbox Game Pass on Your Low-End PC

If you love the controls of a PC, but your computer isn’t quite capable of running video games very well, these tips should get you gaming away on Game Pass in no time.

Everyone should be able to experience the joys of Game Pass. Whether you streamline your PC’s gaming performance using Game Mode or just use Xbox’s Cloud or Remote Play, using Game Pass on your low-end PC is entirely possible.
