How to Make Your iPhone’s Voice Memos Sound Better

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The ‘Enhance Recording’ feature can reduce background noise and increase the volume of speech.

The iPhone’s Voice Memos app is easy to use to record anything from a college lecture to a podcast—but not all recordings turn out to have the quality you’d like. You might end up with wind noise in the background, or a speaker’s voice that is barely audible. With patience (and some audio editing skills), you might use something like Audacity or GarageBand to fix it up—or you can go the simpler route and use the Enhance Recording feature in iOS 14.

Enhance Recording uses machine-learning to remove all the bad parts of the audio, so it will try to reduce the background noise, increase the volume of speech, and generally round things out.

How to improve an Apple voice memo’s quality

To use this feature, open the Voice Memos app and tap a pre-existing recording. Tap the Options icon in the bottom-left corner of the recording (top-right on Mac), and turn on the ‘Enhance Recording‘ feature.

While you’re here, you can also try the ‘Skip Silence‘ feature. This feature was first popularized by podcast apps like Overcast. It’s the same principle here; Apple will analyze the entire file, and it will automatically remove the silent parts.

You can use this Enhance Recording feature while you’re recording, as well, but you’ll need to pause the recording first. Once it’s paused, tap the Options button in the top-left corner and enable the ‘Enhance Recording‘ feature.

You’ll also find this feature when you tap the three-dotted Menu button and choose the ‘Edit Recording‘ option; from here, you can trim the audio recording, too. Once you’re done, you can use the ‘Share‘ option from the Menu to share the recording as needed (it will be exported in .m4a format).
