How to Like and Dislike Songs on Spotify (and Why You Should)

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Liking and disliking songs on Spotify is a quick and easy way to improve your experience and get better recommendations. Here’s how you do it.

Spotify is among the most widely used music and audio apps worldwide. It’s a favorite among users for how easy it is to navigate and for the great suggestions it gives for what to listen to next.

The more time you spend using the app, the better your experience. And a large part of that is thanks to you taking the time to like and dislike songs. It’s a simple thing to do, but it improves the algorithm immensely. So, if you have yet to do that, here’s how you can like and dislike songs on Spotify.

How to Like Songs on Spotify

When you play a song on the Spotify app, a heart symbol hovers close by, and that’s what you use to like songs. It couldn’t be any easier.

Once you start playing a song, you’ll need to tap the music player at the bottom of your screen. After you open it, just tap the heart-shaped button on the left side of the button that takes you back to the previous song.

If you don’t want to play the song, you can tap the three-dot button next to the song to open a new menu. Next, all you need to do is tap Like.

Whatever method you choose, once the heart it’s green, it means you’ve liked the song—easy peasy.

How to Dislike Songs on Spotify

Hiding or disliking your song is a great Spotify playlist tip you need to start using. Don’t worry; it’s just as easy as liking your songs.

First, start playing a song and tap the music player at the bottom of the screen to go full-screen. Next, if you’re on Android, tap the button with a dash inside a circle on the right side of the play/pause button.

Once you press it, it takes you to a screen with options on what you can do to the song in question, including the Hide This Song option. For iPhone users, you’ll need to tap the three-dot button in the top right corner of your screen. Tap Hide Song and the song is officially hidden and disliked.

If you wish to avoid hearing a song, you can search for it via the search tab—you can search with the song’s name or the song lyrics. Then, press the three-dots button next to the song’s name, and select Don’t Play This.

Why Liking and Disliking Songs on Spotify Matters

You might think it isn’t worth the time and effort to like and dislike songs on Spotify, but it’s the opposite. As with most apps nowadays, Spotify has an algorithm that helps navigate your experience within the app—similar to how social media algorithms work.

And just like social media algorithms have some benefits, using Spotify’s algorithms to your advantage is actually a good thing.

The more you interact with the app, the better your experience becomes. That means liking and disliking songs allows Spotify to curate songs you’ll enjoy hearing. You train the algorithm and help it figure out your preferences, getting a more personalized experience with each like and dislike.

Liking and Disliking Is Worth Doing, So Do It

Given that it’s a matter of clicking or tapping a few buttons in a matter of seconds, liking and disliking songs is worth it. And it won’t take long for you to reap the benefits.

Soon after you start, you’ll get better songs, playlists, and artist suggestions. Curate your experience by teaching the app what you like and dislike—it’s worth the time and effort.
