How to Get the Android March 2023 Security Update That Patches Two Key RCE Exploits

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Android security update for March 2023 is rolling out and it fixes two critical bugs. Here’s why you don’t want to skip this one.

Google’s Android March 2023 security update is packed to the proverbial gills with 60 fixes. This isn’t just any routine security update, however. The update also patches two critical remote code execution (RCE) exploits capable of controlling an Android device without your permission.

What Is a Remote Code Execution (RCE) Exploit?

An RCE attack usually leads to nastier, more malicious attacks. It’s one of the most popular methods criminals use to hack websites. On the desktop PC side, RCE attacks can evolve into remote desktop protocol (RDP) attacks that can steal data, blackmail individuals, etc. It hasn’t earned a critical rating for kicks and giggles…

The good news is that preventing RDP attacks on desktop devices, much like preventing RCE attacks on an Android, is possible by simply applying security patches as they become available. Moral of the story? The Android March 2023 security update, like all security updates, is not to be missed.

What’s Getting Fixed in the Android March 2023 Security Update?

The Android Security Bulletin details the issues getting a fix in the Android March 2023 security update. We’re not going to go through all of them here. But Google does provide a few details about the update and the security concerns it prevents:

  • The update ensures apps cannot automatically increase privileges after updating to a higher target SDK.
  • It eliminates the risk of ‘local information disclosure’ without user consent.
  • It removes ‘remote code execution’ exploits affecting Android 11, 12, and 13.

The Android March 2023 security update also fixes component issues with MediaTek, Unisoc, and Qualcomm. These fixes range between high to critical in severity. Seriously, get the update.

How to Get the Android March 2023 Security Update

The Android March 2023 security update is available for all Android versions that still receive regular updates (Android 11, 12, and 13). If you are using Android 10 or below, you’re at the end of life for your Android version.

But Bleeping Computer mentions that users running Android 10 or below may be able to install some (some, not all) of the update’s critical security patches by updating Google Play instead. Do this by tapping Settings > Security & privacy > Updates > Google Play system update > Check for update.

If an update is found, it will automatically download. Restart your device to apply the update. Then, please, consider upgrading your device.

For everyone else running a more modern version of Android, apply the Android March 2023 security update by selecting Settings > System > System Update > Check for updates. As always, the exact path to check for updates might be slightly different depending on what device you’re using.

You know the drill. If an update is found, it will be downloaded. Restart to apply the security patches to your Android device. And if you’re still running anything below Android 13 as of March 2023, why? Give your device the security it needs, and upgrade to the latest version of Android if you can.

Don’t Sleep on Android Security Updates

An Android device with open exploits is an open invitation to bad actors. Slam the door in their faces! Tell them to go elsewhere by applying the Android March 2023 security updates ASAP, and keep your Android device properly protected.
