How to Enable Dolby Vision Gaming on Your Xbox Series X|S

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Make the most out of your next-gen console with Microsoft’s Dolby Vision update.

Following Microsoft’s Dolby Vision update, the Xbox Series X and Series S became the first gaming console to offer support for games playable in Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision HDR.

Dolby Vision support allows Xbox Series X and Series S owners to play compatible games with Dolby Vision on their Dolby Vision-enabled TVs.

Is Dolby Vision Worth It?

Beforehand, Microsoft offered support for Dolby Atmos in 2017. Then, in 2018, they offered consumers the ability to stream entertainment apps like Disney Plus and Netflix with Dolby Vision.

Games that support Dolby Vision played on a Dolby Vision-enabled TV will benefit from the Xbox Series X and Series S’ next-gen features. You can enjoy features like DirectX Raytracing, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and gaming up to 120FPS in brighter and bolder colors.

How to Check if Your Display Supports Dolby Vision

Xbox Series X and Series S owners can only play compatible games in Dolby Vision if their display supports it.

Thankfully, it’s not too tricky to see if your display supports Dolby Vision as Microsoft has built this functionality into the Xbox Series X and Series S.

  1. Press the Xbox button on your Xbox controller when your console is on.
  2. Using the RB button, tab across to the Settings panel.
  3. Select Settings from the menu.
  4. Select General then TV & display options.
  5. Navigate to 4K TV details.

Details on whether your TV supports Dolby Vision will be displayed on the 4K TV details screen, indicated by a green checkmark next to Dolby Vision.

How to Enable Dolby Vision Gaming on Xbox Series X and Series S

If your display is Dolby Vision compatible, you will be able to enable your Xbox Series X or Series S console for gaming in Dolby Vision.

  1. Open the TV & displays option via the Xbox’s Settings panel.
  2. Navigate to Video Modes.
  3. Select Dolby Vision for Gaming.

Your Xbox Series X or Series S will now be set up to support compatible Dolby Vision games.

If you want to enable Dolby Vision for media apps on your console, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Open the TV & displays option via the Xbox’s Settings panel.
  2. Navigate to Video Modes.
  3. Select Allow Dolby Vision.

Can You Play Previous Xbox Titles in Dolby Vision?

Nobody developed previous generation Xbox titles in Dolby Vision, and therefore old Xbox games won’t be compatible.

However, Microsoft has said that Xbox Series X and Series S owners will see the benefits of Dolby Vision across many titles due to Dolby enhancements. This means Dolby Vision-enabled displays can automatically detect a wider range of color and contrast, with picture quality enhancements.

While Dolby Vision is available for streaming media apps and games on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X and Xbox One S users will only be able to leverage Dolby Vision for streaming media apps only. The Xbox One doesn’t support Dolby Vision, and it’s not available while watching Blu-Ray media on any of the consoles.

Future-Proof Your Gaming Experience

To make the most out of your next-gen console, a Dolby Vision-enabled display is worth the investment.

Dolby Vision offers outstanding brightness, colors, contrast, and epic levels of detail.

When compatible games are released, Dolby Vision will be automatically enabled in the game and on your display, offering the best picture available.
