How to Build a Snowman in Adobe Illustrator

Reading Time: 3 minutes

No matter what season it is, you can build a snowman with the help of Adobe Illustrator.

Do you want to build a snowman? No, we are not singing the famous song from the Frozen movie. We really mean it. No matter where you are—whether in the tropics or the poles—we can make a snowman right now with Adobe Illustrator. No snow is required.

Just grab your computer, and let’s get started.

How to Build a Snowman With Adobe Illustrator

If this is your first time working with Illustrator, don’t worry. It is not as intimidating as it looks. Plus, we’ve got all the necessary instructions for you.

If you’d rather use different software, you can learn to animate snow with Adobe After Effects. You can also create quick illustrations with your smartphone.

Step 1

Open Adobe Illustrator. Go to File > New.

In the new window, choose Art & Illustration. Choose the Poster option.

Step 2

Once you have the blank page, orient yourself to the different buttons and windows.

Start by adding a circle for the snowman’s head. You can do this by clicking and holding on the Rectangle tool and changing it to the Ellipse tool. Alternatively, press the L button for the shortcut.

Step 3

Use the Gradient tool to add some gray to the circle. Press G for the shortcut.

Adding a Radial Gradient will give your circle a three-dimensional look, resembling a sphere. Adjust the colors and angle to get the look you want.

Add a bigger circle for the body. Repeat the steps above to get a 3D look.

Step 4

You can create further depth in your image by adding a drop shadow. Go to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow.

Step 5

Add a scarf to your snowman by adding a rectangle between the head and the body. Use the Rectangle tool for this.

To make the scarf look more natural, use the Warp tool to pull in the corners of the rectangle. When you expand the toolbar on the left side by pressing the three dots, you will see the tool. You can also press Shift + R to do the same.

Step 6

Use the paint bucket to fill in the color of the scarf.

Expand the toolbar by pressing the three dots. Go to Paint and click on the Live Paint Bucket. You can also press K to enable the paint bucket. Choose a color and fill in the scarf with the color.

Step 7

Copy and paste the rectangle to add layers to the scarf. Then, use the Warp tool to make the scarf look more natural.

Step 8

Add two circles with the Ellipse tool to make eyes for the snowman. Color the eyes black by pressing K. Then, add two smaller circles inside the eyes to make interesting catchlights.

Step 9

Select the Curvature tool to draw the carrot nose for your snowman. Fill the nose with an orange color.

Remember to add some details on the carrot. Use the Paintbrush tool to add lines and shapes to denote the markings on a carrot.

Step 10

Add an oval shape with the Ellipse tool to make the base of the snowman’s hat. Then, add a square on the top with the Rectangle tool. You can also make a rectangle hat band for added interest.

Step 11

With the Curvature tool, add buttons to the snowman’s body. Then, draw twig hands for the snowman with the same tool.

Step 12

This is the final step where you can add the finishing touches to the snowman. For example, you can add details on the scarf, a smiling mouth, or a puddle in the foreground. So put on your creative hat and bring your snowman alive. Then, you’re ready to export your file.

You can save it as a PNG and reuse it for various purposes. Create a snowman with Illustrator and use it to personalize your holiday greetings and invitations, or even for making custom gift wrapping paper.

Make a Snowman Anytime, Anywhere With Adobe Illustrator

The above technique is just a starter that you can use to try different elements for different occasions, such as Easter bunnies, or Thanksgiving turkeys. As always, you can try Adobe software free for seven days. What are you waiting for? Now is a good time to try Illustrator and make fun designs.
