How to Always Open the Command Prompt as an Administrator on Windows

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Administrator privileges make the Windows Command Prompt a powerful app. Here’s how to ensure it defaults with that power.

Tired of manually opening Command Prompt as an administrator every time you need to do something on Windows? With a few simple steps, you can set up your computer to always open Command Prompt as an administrator.

This can be especially useful for those who often use advanced commands that require admin privileges. Let’s see how to do it.

1. Use the Terminal Settings

It’s simple to open the Command Prompt as an administrator. However, it still requires a few extra steps that can take a chunk of your time if you need to do it frequently. So, to save some time and effort, here’s how to ensure that the Command Prompt opens with administrative privileges by default.

  1. First, press Win + X on your keyboard.
  2. Then select Command Prompt (Admin) from the list of options.
  3. If the UAC window appears, click Yes, and the Command Prompt will open as an admin.
  4. Then click on the down arrow key in the top-left corner of the page.
  5. Select Settings from the menu that appears.
  6. From the left sidebar, select Command Prompt.
  7. Finally, toggle the switch next to the Run this profile as an administrator option.
  8. Click Save to apply the changes.

The next time you launch Command Prompt, it will automatically run as an administrator.

2. Create a Desktop Shortcut

Alternatively, you can create a desktop shortcut for the Command Prompt executable file and then use it to start the program. With this approach, you’ll be able to open the command line with administrative privileges just by double-clicking on the shortcut. Here’s how.

  1. Go to your Desktop and right-click on an empty space.
  2. Select New > Shortcut from the menu that appears.
  3. Type the following into the text field and press Enter.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
  4. Then click Next and name the shortcut.
  5. Click Finish to create the shortcut. It’s now on your desktop.
  6. Right-click on the shortcut and select Properties.
  7. Now on the Shortcut tab, click Advanced.
  8. Select the Run as administrator checkbox and click OK.

That’s it! Now, whenever you want to access an elevated Command Prompt, simply double-click its shortcut.
