How Many DC Fast Chargers Are There in the USA? Where Are They Located?

Although EV charging is much easier than before, you might be surprised about the concentrations of where you’ll find a fast charger.

With the ever-growing adoption of electric vehicles, charging infrastructure is struggling to keep up with booming demand. As a result, many companies offer fast charging in the United States, which is extremely important in a country with immense distances between states.

If your job constantly takes you on the road, and you’re in the market for an electric vehicle, you’ll want to make sure that your customary route includes DC fast chargers on the way.

What Is a DC Fast Charger?

There are three different types of chargers. The first is an L1 charger, which is basically equivalent to plugging your EV into a wall outlet. This is the slowest method to charge your electric vehicle. You can also charge your vehicle via an L2 charger, which ups the ante and can fully charge your vehicle overnight.

L2 chargers can be installed in your home by qualified electricians. Then, at the top end of the EV charging speed hierarchy, you have L3 chargers. These are also called DC fast chargers, and with many chargers hovering around the 350kW mark, you’ll be able to fill up your vehicle from 10% to around 80% in approximately 20 minutes.

Not all DC fast chargers offer such extreme charging speeds. Tesla’s Supercharger network is among the fastest EV charging providers, and it caps its charging rates at 250kW.

Last, not all vehicles can support such fast chargers. But, as fast-charging infrastructure grows, more and more automakers will continue to offer support for faster charging speeds in their vehicle’s hardware packages.

How Many Fast Chargers Are There in the US?

According to the Alternative Fuels Data Center, the United States has a total of 143,442 EVSE ports. EVSE ports are essentially analogous to gas station pumps.

Each EVSE port can charge one vehicle at a time, and it may have different connectors (like gas stations with regular or premium gas) but can still only provide service to one vehicle at a time. Of those 143k EVSE charging ports, 128,789 are public. Of the public EVSE ports, 28,250 are DC fast chargers.

This might seem like a lot of chargers, but many of these fast chargers are concentrated in big states like California. Clearly, there’s still a huge need to expand the charging infrastructure in the US, especially now that EVs are completely taking off in terms of sales.

Where Are DC Fast Chargers Located?

Charging infrastructure is present throughout the United States, but the concentration of these chargers is relatively limited to certain big states. It’s actually pretty surprising how disparate the distribution of charging infrastructure is from state to state.

For example, according to the Alternative Fuel Data Center’s data, California has 8,535 public DC fast chargers. Meanwhile, Idaho has 84. California is an enormous state, but there’s still tons of work to do regarding charging infrastructure. For example, Alaska only has 31 DC fast chargers available, and Alaska isn’t a small state (but its population is typically centralized into large communities).

Once EV sales begin to take off even more, this amount of fast chargers will only contribute to intolerable waiting times at charging stations. Even New York only has a fraction of the chargers available in California, with around 1,156 DC fast chargers.

In the case of New York, we’re talking about a huge state with one of the largest economies in the US. Even a state as vast as Texas has just 1,432 public DC fast chargers.

There’s lots of work to be done expanding local charging infrastructure across the United States. Upgrading EV charging infrastructure must be prioritized (along with improving the electrical grid) because EV adoption isn’t going to wait. Consumers are already buying EVs like there’s no tomorrow.

EV Charging Infrastructure Still Needs to Expand

Electric vehicles are the future, but the charging infrastructure is still lagging behind what is required for the huge influx of EVs hitting the market.

The current demand for electric vehicles is through the roof, and concerns about the electric grid’s ability to keep up, as well as the construction of a more robust charging infrastructure, must be addressed sooner rather than later.
