How Honest Are Paid Reviews From TikTok Influencers?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Can you trust paid reviews on TikTok? Here’s a look at how to tell if reviews are honest.

Whether it’s for makeup, fashion, or anything in between, you have probably seen reviews for new and fun products all over your TikTok For You Page.

But did you know that influencers are often paid by the companies selling these products to review them? So how can you be sure that these reviews are even honest?

How Do Paid TikTok Reviews Work?

Not all paid reviews work the same way. Often, a brand reaches out to a specific influencer on TikTok asking if they would like to review their product on social media as a paid opportunity. If the influencer agrees, both parties will negotiate the payment and then the brand will often send the influencer the product for free (although not always), so that they can take pictures or videos using it for the review.

There may be some requirements for the video, such as how long it should be, keywords or features to highlight, or how to include information on where to buy the product.

Influencers are sometimes paid a flat fee or a varying amount based on how many views the TikTok review gets. Payment can be directly from the brand or through a third party specializing in influencer marketing.

Paid reviews are just one thing that make TikTok one of the best social media platforms for businesses.

Are Influencers Honest in Paid TikTok Reviews?

The short answer is sometimes. The long answer is it depends on the specific influencer and the rules of the review that they agreed to. Popular beauty influencer Mikayla Nogueira experienced backlash in February 2023 for posting a review of a mascara claiming it made her eyelashes look so much better, but she was accused of using false lashes.

This is why it is best not to trust just any review you see on TikTok, and another reason that TikTok can be bad for everyone. If you are interested in hearing about a product before you buy it though, TikTok reviews can be a helpful resource, as long as you check their credibility first.

How To Tell If a Paid Review Is Honest

There are a few key ways to check if a TikTok review is honest, although there is always a chance they are not.

1. Does The Review Discuss Both Positives and Negatives?

Everything has its pros and cons. Honest and quality reviews will often tell you what they liked best and what they didn’t like about the product, so that you can make the best decision for yourself. A review that is only saying positive things may be hiding some of the truth, or it could be biased because the influencer giving the review is hoping to make more reviews for that brand in the future.

2. Check The Comments

TikTok comments can be really helpful in creating a conversation and getting more than one opinion on a product. If you see the most perfect review of a product, but all the comments are saying otherwise, the reviewer is probably being dishonest. Commenters aren’t the ones being paid, so they are more likely to just be giving their true opinion.

3. Has This Influencer Stated Their Standards When Agreeing To Do a Review?

Many big influencers on TikTok have addressed their standards when they agree to do reviews on social media for payment. These can include not doing reviews for products that they don’t like or always being honest in reviews, even if it causes them to lose a business relationship.

Check out the reviewer’s profile for a video addressing their standards. If you can’t find one, that influencer may not have standards, meaning they could be dishonest.

An influencer could claim to have standards and still lie, but if that happens, fans can at least hold them accountable to their word.

Watch TikTok Reviews With Caution

In the end, the best person to decide if a product works for you is yourself. TikTok can be great for help with purchasing decisions, but be cautious when buying something just because an influencer said they loved it.
