How AI Was Surprisingly Absent at MWC 2023

Reading Time: 3 minutes

With all of the tech industry seemingly flocking to AI, MWC 2023 seemed like the ideal place to show it off–but it was surprisingly absent.

With most of the tech industry seemingly shifting focus to AI at the moment, surely Mobile World Congress would have plenty of the next-gen tech to show. However, AI was surprisingly absent from the show, with only a few notable announcements from brands exhibiting at MWC 2023.

Here, we’ll take a look at a few AI-focused announcements from MWC, and what it’s absence means in the world of tech.

Were There Any AI Announcements at MWC 2023?

While MWC focuses on mobile technology, which is mostly hardware, all sorts of tech gets debuted at the event. There we some AI announcements across the show floor, though a lot fewer than we were expecting.

Qualcomm demoed a smartphone processor can run AI neural networks locally on the chipset. The example being used was Stable Diffusion. Rather than relying on linking back to the cloud, the chipset was able to run Stable Diffusion locally. This means you can create AI-generated images entirely on a device.

Right now, there aren’t too many applications for this ability. But as AI becomes more commonplace, the ability to run operations locally on a device will be invaluable. Consider being able to create content on your device, even without an internet connection. Or chat with an AI-powered chatbot while off-the-grid. It’s certainly more exciting for future AI applications.

Beyond this, smartphone manufacturers packed AI-powered processing into their cameras for behind-the-scenes tweaks. No brand goes into specific detail on exactly what the processing does, but the tech selects the best image from a bunch taken in quick succession, and adjusts colors to the brand’s preferences. Plenty of other business exhibitors spoke about preparing for AI, but that’s not particularly relevant to consumers.

Clearly, not much AI talk happened at MWC 2023. To be frank, it did feel like a notable absence. Headlines are dominated by the two letter acronym, but hardly any brands spoke about it. What does this mean?

What Does This Absence of AI Mean for Tech?

The biggest takeaway from the absence of AI at MWC 2023 is that brands don’t yet seem confident to begin integrating AI-powered functionality into their products. Bing with its ChatGPT integration certainly has some… quirks. And so, is it any surprise that manufacturers don’t want to plug this tech into physical devices?

But it goes further than that. AI tools are mostly software-driven. That is to say, you can access them through devices. Currently, there aren’t too many hardware-based requirements for artificial intelligence. Could this be a sign that AI will keep away from hardware, and stick to software?

It’s hard to draw any real conclusion from the lack of AI at MWC 2023. Artificial intelligence is still really rather new. So, is it any surprise that brands are being cautious around the technology? Perhaps next year’s MWC will introduce more AI into consumer tech. But for now, it seems devices are going to stay rooted in human intelligence.

MWC Isn’t Very Artificially Intelligent

MWC 2023 mostly stayed away from AI, besides a few minor announcements from brands. It’s tough to analyze what this means for tech as a whole, but it appears that AI is staying far away from consumer devices for now. Until then, you can enjoy plenty of the other gadgets from MWC 2023.
