How 2022 Was the Year of the Nintendo Switch

Reading Time: 4 minutes

The Nintendo Switch had an excellent 2022, arguably more so than other consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Here’s why.

2022 was a great year to be a gamer. But there was one console in particular that outshone the rest in more ways than one. Nintendo absolutely slayed 2022 in terms of game releases, exclusive titles, games to look forward to during 2023, and making its console accessible to all.

There are many things to consider when looking at what video game console had the best year, but the Nintendo Switch takes the cake in almost every one of them.

The Nintendo Switch Had a Great Year of Releases During 2022

Nintendo may not have secured Game of the Year at the 2022 Game Awards, but its roster was choc full of fantastic releases nonetheless. Many of Nintendo’s most successful franchises saw new releases in 2022, such as Kirby, Mario & Rabbids, and Splatoon. Pokémon fans were even spoiled with not one but two entries in the mainline series during 2022.

Both Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Splatoon 3 sold record numbers upon their release, making them the most successful entries in their respective franchises so far. Not only were they some of the best Nintendo Switch games of 2022, but some of the best Nintendo Switch games in general.

The Nintendo Switch Has the Most Exclusive Titles by Far

Out of all the games released during 2022, the Nintendo Switch saw the most exclusives. An exclusive game is only released on one console. Exclusive games are a great asset for a video game console because it means gamers have to purchase that system to play it.

The PlayStation 5 did have some undoubtedly incredible releases during 2022, but most of them were also released on either the PlayStation 4 or PC. And sadly, Xbox didn’t add any exclusive titles at all to its ranks in 2022.

One of Nintendo’s main points of focus is exclusive titles, and 2022 saw plenty more that could make their way onto a list of the best Nintendo Switch exclusive games of all time. If you’re looking for exclusive games, the Nintendo Switch is definitely the place to find them.

There Are Plenty More Nintendo Switch Games to Look Forward to in 2023

The Nintendo Switch had an incredible year of releases in 2022, but gamers’ wallets aren’t going to be able to catch a break during 2023. There are already tons of highly anticipated games that were announced during 2022, including The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Fire Emblem Engage.

The tremendous roster of upcoming 2023 Nintendo Switch games is already looking extremely promising, and that doesn’t even include shadow drops. Nintendo has been known to announce upcoming games that are scheduled for release in a matter of weeks or months with no warning. Who knows? Perhaps 2023 will be the year that Metroid Prime 4 will be released, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

The Nintendo Switch Is in Plentiful Supply

It’s one thing to have a huge roster of excellent video games, but that’s not very helpful if gamers are struggling to get their hands on the console, to begin with. During 2020 the tech industry was struck with a massive chip shortage that affected not only the gaming industry but also impacted the manufacturing of cars, solar panels, smartphones, televisions, and many more products around the globe.

This put a massive dent in the manufacturing and sales of video game consoles like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and, of course, the Nintendo Switch. Some companies, such as Sony, are still struggling to get their next-gen consoles into the hands of gamers. But thankfully for Nintendo Switch fans, the production of Nintendo Switch consoles is currently reasonably stable.

There Are Many Exciting Nintendo Switch OLED Designs to Choose From

Not only was the base model of the Nintendo Switch OLED widely available during 2022, but Nintendo also released more limited edition themed versions of the Nintendo Switch OLED. Occasionally with a big game release, Nintendo will release a special version of the Nintendo Switch alongside it. These variants feature stylized Joy-Cons and docks. Sometimes, even the console itself will get a makeover.

This has been seen in the past with the likes of the Animal Crossing Switch. But Nintendo also released Splatoon 3 and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Nintendo Switch OLED consoles in 2022.

The Nintendo Switch already has a wide range of fun and engaging color options. But if you like expressing yourself with your video game console, the Nintendo Switch added even more options to the color palette in 2022.

The Nintendo Switch Had an Incredible Year in 2022

The Nintendo Switch is a force to be reckoned with in the gaming industry, and 2022 was no exception. When you think about what makes a video game console great, the main thing one should consider is the games it offers.

An incredible beefy console is awesome, of course. But the games are really what put those beasts to use, and the Nintendo Switch excelled in that category. The Nintendo Switch had the best year in 2022 and 2023 also looks just as promising.
