Four Creepy Video Games: Days of Doom, Haunted House, Solomon Snow: First Contact and Creepy Tale: Ingrid Penance

Reading Time: 5 minutes

You don’t want cute video games, you want creepy video games. And that’s what you get with DAYS OF DOOM, HAUNTED HOUSE, SOLOMON SNOW: FIRST CONTACT and CREEPY TALE: INGRID PENANCE

Here's Creepy

What makes a video game ‘creepy?’ Is it the artwork that’s drawn or the way the characters are portrayed or a holiday theme like Halloween? Some would argue yes but many would disagree and say that what makes a game creepy is how it makes you feel. Does it cause a tingle at the base of the spine while playing or have the hairs on the back of your neck rise up? Does it create a feeling of paranoia that won’t let you play it in the dark when there’s no one else home. Or that feeling that there’s a shadow without anyone casting it just out of sight? Someone watching and waiting, maybe? Let’s just say that for a video game to be creepy it needs to do something different and unexpected. So it can be a modern game or a retro-like game or actually a retro game reimagined — doesn’t matter just as long as it grabs hold of the player and keeps their attention. Which these 4 creepy games do. And they’re called DAYS OF DOOM, HAUNTED HOUSE, SOLOMON SNOW: FIRST CONTACT and CREEPY TALE: INGRID PENANCE.

SAY HELLO TO DAYS OF DOOM

So the world’s full of mutants and ghouls and they’re ugly man. No big deal — just grab a bunch of motley heroes and tell them to start fighting as you and they collect resources for building a less creepy community. DAYS OF DOOM upchanges each time you play because having a safe and sedate path just don’t cut it — sure it’s brutal out there but if you reach Sanctuary you can relax (like that’s going to happen). Oh sure it has a cartoony-like look that’s a bit quirky and more comic book than reality, but what’s happening is pretty ugly. So there’s nothing like blighting up the post-apocalyptic life.

Plenty of stuff to pick up along the way but the real issue is using those heroes abilities to their best advantage — don’t let the original orchestral soundtrack lull you into a false sense of security that it’s an easy ride along. This is a fighting game with a bit of a retro look where no two runs are the same. Good thing the stats don’t follow suit but instead follow along as you build them up. So specs: eight character classes, a dozen enemies (you want zombies, you get zombies) and two ‘lovely’ boss fights. But you’ve some tricks up your sleeve too and if you build an army of ‘helpful’ folks, things might turn out better than the last time.

And let’s face it — most of the time you’re getting your head handed to you. But it’s fun, right?

DAYS OF DOOM is available on a variety of platforms, including the PlayStation, PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and the Atari VCS. For more go to https://atari.com/products/days-of-doom

THIS HOUSE IS A HAUNTED HOUSE

The original HAUNTED HOUSE was an interesting 2600 game in that it took place almost exclusively in the dark, being that the character moving around had the ability to shine a light on command but no defenses against intrusion. Updating the game requires more than just enjoying higher resolution graphics and faster responses, it needs a story that provides a creepy atmosphere to take part in, Which this does, using as reference Lyn Graves, who goes to this ‘haunted’ mansion in order to find her missing uncle. And enjoying the premise of the 2600 title, it’s not a gore-fest but more of an exploration that she encounters.

Because success isn’t about destroying enemies so much as it is avoiding traps and discovering the unknown and solving puzzles that show up. Get caught by a spirit doesn’t mean a horrible cutaway but instead the character returns to the beginning and has to navigate an all new layout as the enemies and locations are now rearranged (rogue-like elements in other words). Find power ups and find missing friends and take advantage of their abilities as they become playable characters is part of the fun — which is why a more cartoon and whimsical art style overlays the spooky and goofiness of this game. Because each part of the missing urn that must be found comes with its own Boss and friendly, they’re not. And for sure there’s hidden ‘Easter eggs’ centering around the original 2600 game and others of Atari”s golden age.

CONTACT SOLOMON SHOW: FIRST CONTACT

Classic shooter games require enemies that are just plain creepy — otherwise it’s like a sad day at a shooting gallery. So here you get those creepy aliens and a host of ‘real’ people characters that have skills you can abuse, er make that take advantage of. Being that you’ve got a 3D-ish top-down shooter (meaning you aren’t going horizontal), an itchy trigger finger is fine, an assortment of weapons is fine, but having fast reflexes and knowing when and where to shoot is even finer. That’s because there’s a bit of puzzling to deal with, as in using the parts of your brain that aren’t directly tied to that trigger finger.

And since you start off as an ordinary office guard having to rescue people throughout the 398 floors of a building, anyone thinking there’s a callback to Die Hard is of course wrong. Because McClane’s character never had to actually develop skills along the way (unless you count having a machine-gun, ho-ho-ho).

So team building amidst an alien invasion is a bit different than the usual company retreat. More violent too. Available on Steam, more info can be had at https://solomonsnow.com/

RUN FROM CREEPY TALE: INGRID PENANCE

So yeah it has ‘creepy’ right in the name, which gives us what to expect. You got a spoiled little girl by the name of Ingrid and she’s moving around dark and dangerous landscapes — there’s plenty of characters for her to interact with; some want to see her statuesque as in turned into a statue; some want to give her nightmares as if her falling down into Hell isn’t nightmarish enough; some want to eat her, because well, why not? But nothing there is to her advantage or looks in any way pleasant

So obviously she’d like to get the hell out (yeah, bad pun for sure). Luckily she’s run into a sarcastic little imp that has taken an interest in herand just might help her out.

So as she and xxx move about, it’s not a matter so much of running away from the denizens as to solving the puzzles that keep confronting her and that are full of varying mechanics as regards trying to be solved. Two things to keep in mind: 1) what and how Ingrid interacts with her envorment affects the results — what happens to her because there’s not a single ‘locked in’ ending. And 2)as if this game wasn’t creepy enough, it’s got voices working throughout as opposed to ‘safe’ text to read and contemplate.

NAME brings to mind the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and not sanitized Disney. It’s available on various platforms like the Playstation, Nintendo Switch and Xbox. For a video go to https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2945817027
