7 Things We Don’t Like About the PS5

Reading Time: 4 minutes

The PS5 is a great console, but it isn’t without its flaws. Here are some of the PS5’s biggest weaknesses.

There’s so much to love about the PS5—from its incredible graphics and the immersive DualSense controller features to the growing library of epic exclusive games. However, we can’t help but have a few gripes about Sony’s latest console, and we bet we are not alone!

There are a few things about the PlayStation 5 that have been a source of frustration among gamers and, chances are, you can relate to some of them. This article will cover some of the most common complaints about the PS5.

1. The PS5’s Gigantic Size

We bet one of the first things you noticed after unboxing the PS5 is its massive size— it’s almost impossible to miss that! Not to mention that it has this in-your-face design and color that has been splitting opinions. Granted, it does pack some serious hardware, but it leaves you with an important question: where will you fit this behemoth of a machine in your entertainment center?

Whether you choose to turn your PS5 from vertical to horizontal (or vice versa) close to your TV or opt for a wall mount, this console is not the most space-friendly out there. And you may want to rethink again if you thought about hiding it inside a cabinet, as it may reduce airflow and damage its internal components.

One of the main reasons this console is so huge is to accommodate its cooling system, as the console needs to stay cool due to the intense hardware inside. Unfortunately, this massive size does not reflect the PS5’s built-in storage capacity.

2. Limited Storage and Large PS5 Game Size

So, not only do you have to deal with this massive console taking up space, but you may also need to find room to accommodate an external hard drive to store your PS4 games. That’s because the PlayStation 5 comes with only 667 GB of usable storage, which is nothing close to what you will need to be a serious gamer.

Adding to the frustration, some PS5 games take up a significant amount of space, with games like Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War taking more than 200 GB of your precious storage. Not to mention that most of these games continuously receive updates and patches, so you can expect that number to climb up even more.

That said, you may want to increase your PS5 storage space and manage what you already have, and no, you can’t use an external hard drive to play PS5 games!

3. The PS5 Has Limited Backward Compatibility

Backward compatibility is one of the most exciting features we have become accustomed to with next-gen consoles. This allows you to play your favorite titles from past generations on your new console, eliminating the need for digging out your old console and cables.

Although the PS5 allows you to play your favorite PS4 titles, sometimes with a few improvements, the PS5 backward compatibility feature has been somewhat limited, as it is trickier to play PS3 and PS2 games.

For instance, you will need a PS Plus Premium subscription and an excellent internet connection to stream PS3 games, as you can’t download them to your console. On the other hand, Microsoft has put more effort into providing backward compatibility with its Xbox Series X and S consoles, as it allows you to download and play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and even some original Xbox games.

4. It’s Easy to Download the PS4 Version of Cross-Gen Games by Mistake

One of the most common mistakes new PS5 owners often make is downloading the wrong version of cross-gen games. Since the PlayStation 5 is backward compatible with PlayStation 4 games, when looking for a game available on both generations, you can mistakenly download the PS4 version instead of the PS5 version or both, as it’s not exactly obvious which version is for what console.

That said, if you have some cross-gen games, you may want to check which versions you have downloaded. Don’t worry if you’ve made a mistake as you can upgrade PS4 games to their PS5 versions. You can also delete the PS4 version if you downloaded both to free up some storage space. To do this, go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select the game, and delete the PS4 version.

5. DualSense Controller Drift

Although not specific to the PlayStation 5, controller drift is a common issue you may encounter at some point with this console. If you are unfamiliar with the term, controller drift occurs when your console registers random movement inputs even when you are not touching the analog sticks.

This can make gaming frustrating, to say the least, and it’s not as though you have kept money somewhere to buy a brand-new controller. Besides, it’s not exactly cheap! Fortunately, you might be able to fix PS5 controller drift without spending a dime. However, if the issue persists, and you can’t fix it yourself, you may have no choice but to purchase a new controller.

6. The PS5’s Noisy Disc Drive

Another issue you may encounter with the PlayStation 5 is a noisy disc drive that sounds like a jet engine when you insert a game disc. This is not exactly an alarming issue, as it’s normal for the disc drive to make some noise when loading games. However, the noise can be quite loud and annoying.

Luckily, you can fix this by updating your PS5 or manually ejecting the disc. This means you will need to turn it off with the disc inside, remove the faceplate, and use a screwdriver to manually eject the disc from your PS5. This should help reduce the noise from the disc drive.

7. PS Plus Is a Poor Game Pass Competitor

One thing you probably dislike about the PlayStation 5 is the lack of a true competitor to Xbox’s Game Pass. Although Sony launched an expanded PlayStation Plus catalog, the service is still far from offering the same great value for money that you get with Microsoft’s Game Pass.

Sony’s subscription model seems to lean more toward older games, while Xbox Game Pass subscribers can enjoy more recent, high-profile titles. Lastly, as mentioned above, you will need an excellent internet connection to stream PS3 games, as you can’t download them to your console.

The PS5 Is Not Without Its Flaws

The PlayStation 5 is a remarkable piece of hardware and a great addition to any gamer’s setup. However, as with all things, it has its share of flaws.

While we hope Sony fixes some of these issues with subsequent updates, there’s still much to love about the PS5. We bet this console will keep you entertained for many years to come.
