If you’d like to purchase an EV, you can now expect to wait significantly longer than for a traditional vehicle. This is partly because of supply and demand, but also because of the current chip shortage. Skipping the wait list entirely isn’t possible. But here are five ways to speed up your next EV purchase.
1. Buy a Used EV
Used vehicles aren’t for everyone. There’s something about purchasing a new car that many people aren’t going to be prepared to compromise on. Along with being in perfect condition, it’s an easier process. But if you are considering one, here are some key features you should inspect before buying a used EV.
If you’re interested in going the used route, you may be able to purchase a used EV significantly faster than at retail. In many parts of the country, it’s possible to find and purchase one within a few days. Depending on availability, you may find a used EV that looks identical to a retail model but still costs significantly less.
If you want an EV because they are more environmentally friendly, a used model is also very much recommended. It’s worth noting that the availability of used EVs varies widely. In some areas, buying used is just as difficult as buying new.
2. Buy From an Established Automaker
While wait times for EVs are increasing overall, the longest wait times are typically associated with new manufacturers. EVs are still a somewhat new concept in comparison to traditional vehicles. Some EV brands you’ve never heard of have only recently started making them, and they haven’t been able to make the process as efficient as possible.
If you’d like to reduce the time that you are waiting, it’s therefore a good idea to limit yourself to established manufacturers. Many of these manufacturers still have wait times, but they tend to be shorter. Because they’ve been around for a long time, the delay that you are quoted is also more likely to be accurate.
3. Be Prepared to Travel
The availability of EVs varies widely across the country. Regardless of where you live, it should be possible to purchase an EV from your local dealership eventually. The current EV shortage is not expected to be permanent.
If you’d like to reduce the time that you wait now, however, you might find that there are significantly higher stock levels in other cities. This would allow you to expand your search significantly and, in return, reduce the time that you wait.
Driving for hours in order to make your purchase obviously isn’t ideal. It’s also possible that you may drive to another city only to find that the model that you’re interested in has recently been sold. But many people would prefer to put up with this if it saves them a few months of waiting.
Being prepared to travel to a more buyer-friendly market also has other advantages. Low stock levels tend to cause dealerships to charge a premium for any cars that are available. Buying elsewhere may therefore be a good way to save money.
4. Choose Your Model and Trim Based on Manufacturing Order
If there’s a particular EV that you want, there’s very little that you can do to get it faster. Many in-demand models have been delayed for over a year, and no amount of negotiation is going to get your hands on one faster.
If you’re flexible about the make and model, however, a little bit of research might find you getting behind the wheel a lot faster. In an effort to compete with each other, most manufacturers are producing EVs with similar specs at similar prices. Opting for something different may, therefore, not mean much of a sacrifice.
Along with the model of the vehicle, the specific upgrades that you want can also play a role in how long you wait. While you might want a specific trim, it’s always worth asking about the wait time and asking yourself how long you’re prepared to wait in order to achieve it.
5. Sign Up to a Waitlist
Many auto dealerships are now asking consumers to join a waitlist if they’d like to buy a new EV. Signing up usually requires a small fee, and you are then given an approximate date to be able to purchase your new car.
If the date being offered is significantly far off, this isn’t always an attractive offer. But it’s still worth signing up anyway. The fee being asked typically isn’t very much, and if you find an EV before then or simply change your mind about purchasing one, you can take yourself off the waitlist and receive a full refund.
It’s worth noting that the fee for joining a waitlist isn’t always taken off the price you pay for the car. If you’d like to join a waitlist, it’s therefore important to ask the dealership whether you are paying part of the car’s price now, or an additional fee for simply being in the line.
Electric Vehicles Take Longer to Purchase, but People Are Still Buying
EVs are an attractive option, but their popularity levels mean that they’re not the easiest product to purchase right now. If you’re trying to choose between an EV and a traditional vehicle, the delay associated with EVs should definitely be part of your decision.
There are many ways that you can reduce the wait time, but they typically involve compromises in both where you buy the vehicle and even what vehicle you buy. Regardless of what you do, some delay is also unavoidable. Buying a traditional vehicle is simply a faster process.
It’s worth noting that any vehicle purchase is a significant investment and one that tends to last for many years. If it’s an EV that you definitely want, it’s therefore worth waiting to get one.
