5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Jailbreak Your PS5

Reading Time: 3 minutes

While jailbreaking your PS5 may sound like a good idea, you shouldn’t do it. Here’s why.

Once a console has been around long enough, someone is bound to jailbreak it. And in October 2022, a modder finally released the PlayStation 5 from its ‘prison.’

The PS5 jailbreak means you can install ‘free’ games and custom software using the console’s debug settings. For example, a famous hacker by the name of Lance McDonald managed to install P.T. (the incredible teaser for Silent Hills) on his console.

While this seems pretty cool on the surface, there are several reasons why you shouldn’t jailbreak your PS5.

1. You Can No Longer Update Your PS5 and Games

To successfully jailbreak your PlayStation 5, the system needs to be running a specific firmware version or older. So if you want to jailbreak your console, you need to hold off on updating your PlayStation 5. That means you’ll miss out on the benefits that come with future updates, such as performance improvements, bug fixes, and new features, until the jailbreaking process catches up.

Also, to connect to the PlayStation Network, your PS5 needs to be on the latest firmware version. Since a jailbroken console is outdated, you can’t log on to the PlayStation Network. And you can’t buy digital games or download the ones you already own.

Furthermore, you can’t update the ones you’ve already installed. And, in some cases, you won’t even be able to install games that are on discs if they require a firmware version higher than the one you’re running.

2. You Can’t Play Online With Friends

Another caveat of jailbreaking your console is that online multiplayer will be inaccessible. Considering that some games are multiplayer but don’t have split-screen, your only option is to play them with friends online. Jailbreaking your PS5 makes that impossible since it cannot connect to the PlayStation Network (PSN).

Apart from your online multiplayer woes, you will also miss out on the PS5’s social gaming features, including PS5 Share Play and PS5 Share Screen.

3. You Risk Getting Your PSN Account or Console Banned

Your PlayStation 5 can still connect to the internet in its jailbroken state, but it’s advisable to keep it offline (or not jailbreak the console at all). While your console is online, it’s still sending data to Sony’s servers, meaning there’s a chance the company can find out what you did. And considering you’re violating PlayStation’s terms of service, it will have every right to block your PSN account permanently.

If your account can’t access PSN, you’ll be locked out of all the digital games you bought, as well as any services and subscriptions you paid for. What’s worse is that you won’t even get a refund for any of them. You will have to create another PSN account and start all over again.

In other cases, Sony can ban your PlayStation 5 console instead. That means, while your account is safe, you or anyone else can’t sign in to the PlayStation Network on that PS5.

4. You Can Brick Your PlayStation 5

When jailbreaking your PS5, you need to know what you’re doing, as any wrong move can permanently break it. This will effectively make the console nothing more than a glorified brick you can use as a door stopper or paperweight. The only option to fix a permanently bricked PS5 is to get another one.

5. You Will Void Your Warranty Agreement

While jailbreaking your PS4 or PS5 is not illegal, it does, however, violate the warranty agreement between you and Sony. That’s because you’re tampering with the system and modifying it in ways Sony does not allow, as stated in the PS5’s warranty. So if you accidentally brick your console, Sony will not fix or replace it, even if it’s still under warranty.

Jailbreak Your PlayStation 5 at Your Own Risk

The concept of jailbreaking a console is enticing, but it comes with some risks. Particularly, Sony can ban your PSN account or PS5, you can brick the console, and you no longer have warranty support.

You also need to ask yourself if pirated games and further system customization is worth missing out on the PS5’s online capability. We certainly think it is not.
