5 Cool Things You Didn’t Know About Sony and Honda’s New Afeela EV

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Sony and Honda launched a new EV brand at CES 2023, and here’s what you need to know.

At CES 2023, Sony and Honda announced their new EV brand partnership, Afeela. The name doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but the product itself is full of amazing technology features that are sure to blow your mind.

If you want a Sony-powered living room on wheels, this might be the perfect EV for you. Sony aims to combine Honda’s vehicle manufacturing expertise with its tech and entertainment know-how to create the perfect transportation experience.

1. Media Bar

The front and rear end of the futuristic EV sedan feature what Afeela calls the Media Bar. This is pretty much exactly as it sounds; a screen that takes center stage between the two headlights (in the case of the front Media Bar), and it displays super vital information like the weather and Spider-Man graphics.

Obviously, information like this is of utmost importance in a car, especially in the Spider-Man promo. But on the other hand, the display shows the vehicle’s charging status, which will come in handy.

Imagine leaving your vehicle at a charging station and being able to take a glimpse of the current state of charge from afar. Very nice. Hopefully, Sony doesn’t have the bright idea to plaster ads for its latest movies on owners’ cars.

2. 45 Cameras and Sensors

The Afeela EV will be a technological wonder when it’s released in 2026. Afeela says the car will be equipped with various sensors and cameras that will enable the Afeela to perform as a Level 3 autonomous vehicle.

Sony and Honda are mixing their respective levels of expertise in the development of these systems, and the vehicle will also feature processing power by Qualcomm.

3. Media-Centric Interior

The Afeela probably won’t be winning any drag races against the ridiculously quick Model S Plaid, so Sony is banking on its status as a media powerhouse to make the interior of the Afeela the best place to be in the EV space.

Sony is the developer of the Playstation, so the interior will likely feature heavy support for Playstation titles, and movies that fall under the Sony umbrella will also likely be offered in the interior.

Afeela features a huge screen up front like many of the EVs currently on the market, but this screen is probably one of the biggest ever fitted on a production vehicle.

There are also two smaller screens on the left and right extremes, which display the rearview mirror feed. Unfortunately, rearview mirror feeds aren’t legal in some countries, so it will be interesting to see what information Sony makes available on those screens for select markets.

4. Yoke Steering Device

The Afeela EV sedan takes a huge page from Tesla’s book on interior design with its yoke steering device. Unfortunately, in the world of EVs (and automobiles in general), everything gets copied quickly, and whether you like it or not, the yoke will probably be the next big fad.

The yoke is a matter of personal taste, but the interior of the Afeela is a little dull. The interior is generic and uninspiring for a vehicle that’s supposed to be the launching pad for Sony’s foray into the electronic mobility sector.

5. Design Reminiscent of Lucid Air

The Afeela looks like a mashup of several EVs currently for sale. But, to the non-enthusiast, the Afeela could pass as a Lucid Air. The similarities are striking, even beyond the obvious fact that both vehicles feature extremely slippery bodywork designed for ultimate range.

Even if some similarities are due to aerodynamic efficiency, they’re almost too similar. The Lucid looks much better, though, with the Afeela coming off generic and dry.

The Sony-Honda Afeela EV Is Still a Ways Off

The Afeela EV has many positive aspects, even if others aren’t so inspiring. Sony and Honda will have plenty of time to sort out the kinks and make modifications wherever necessary because the Afeela won’t be available for quite a while.
