3 Key Improvements in the Refreshed Volvo C40 and XC40 Electric Vehicles

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Volvo’s EV range is set for a refesh, but what new features will the C40 and XC40 cars boast?

Volvo has announced updates to its fully electric C40 and XC40 models for the new model year, including increased range, improved charging, and rear-wheel-drive variants. Let’s take a look at what improvements are offered in these vehicles.

A Long-Awaited Offering From Volvo

This marks the first time in 25 years that Volvo will offer a rear-wheel-drive car. The Swedish car maker has also developed in-house the second-generation permanent magnet electric motor driving the rear axles for its fully electric C40 and XC40 models.

Javier Varela, Volvo’s chief operating officer and deputy chief executive, said:

‘These updates are another big step in our work toward becoming a fully electric car maker by 2030. Range and charging times are new key factors for more and more of our customers, and these improvements make our fully electric models even more attractive than they already were.’

So, let’s take a closer look at these updates.

1. Rear-Wheel Drive: To Increase Driving Range

The C40 and XC40 now offer two new rear-wheel drive powertrain options with the second-generation e-motors that are sure to excite.

The first option is a standard range 175kW e-motor, which provides a 3% increase in power output and a range of up to 285 miles according to WLTP’s test cycle.

The second option is a larger battery paired with a more powerful 185kW e-motor, which provides an impressive range of up to 320 miles for the XC40 Recharge and 330 miles for the C40 Recharge.

2. New In-House Twin Motors for All-Wheel Drive

Volvo has updated its all-wheel drive (AWD) variant for the C40 and XC40 models. The new setup includes an in-house 183kW e-motor on the rear axle and a new 117 kW e-motor on the front axle, paired with an 82kWh battery pack.

This improves the range of the XC40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD to 310 miles, a 39 miles boost from the previous version and the C40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD to 315 miles (35 miles boost).

3. Faster Charging

The larger 82kWh battery pack has an improved charging power, allowing for a faster charging rate of 200kW DC, up from 150kW DC. This means that it takes only 28 minutes to charge the EV’s battery from 10% to 80%.

Electric Car Makers Fight for New Customers

With increased range, improved charging, and rear-wheel-drive variants, Volvo’s refreshed C40 and XC40 electric vehicles are poised to appeal to a wider range of customers. These updates align with the company’s goal of becoming a fully electric car maker by 2030 and demonstrate its commitment to innovation and sustainability in the electric vehicle industry.

Of course, Volvo is not alone in joining the EV market. Other companies are unveiling their own new electric vehicle models, such as Sony and Honda with the Afeela brand. It will be exciting to see how these new models compare and what new innovations they bring to the market.
