If your personalized algorithm on YouTube or TikTok is serving up World War II documentaries instead of game streamers, you might not be aware of the massive popularity of people like Dan Rhodes and Pokimane, but they’re superstars to the kids. Here’s who they’re watching.
NichLmao, real name Nicholai Perrett, has amassed over 19 million followers to his YouTube channel over the past two years or so. The 21 year-old is based in Singapore, but his stunt/dare/comedy channel is clearly popular to young people all over the world.
Dan Rhodes is all about magic. The 19 year-old’s short videos of close-up illusions are all over YouTube and TikTok, and tens of millions of people follow him there. His supply of ‘how did he do that?’ tricks never seems to run out.
Khabane ‘Khaby’ Lame may be the most ‘only on the internet’ celebrity in existence. He’s the most popular person on TikTok with over 150 million subscribers, and he did it all through silent deadpan reactions to other people’s videos. He’s since branched out a bit, but the core Khaby vibe remains undiluted.
Plenty of people play horror games online—the genre is a natural fit for streaming—but CoryxKenshin may be the most entertaining. He does more than scare himself for the amusement of his 15 million fans; he also makes original comedy videos, reacts to things, and even takes on serious subjects sometimes.
It wouldn’t be TikTok without dancing videos, and 22 year-old Addison Rae is queen of the genre—more than 88 million people follow her on TikTok alone. Rae has also released a single and starred in Netflix feature He’s All That. How far her ‘mainstream’ efforts will take her in terms of traditional stardom remains to be seen, but she’s already a superstar to younger people.
24 year-old YouTuber Ian Boggs blew up on YouTube and TikTok for his comedic ‘What it’s like growing up Asian’ series of videos, and expanded his range to include stunt videos, fictional series, and more.
The highlights of YZ’s TikTok account are vids devoted to photography, and nearly 50 million subscribers have taken notice. YZ snaps interesting still images, then goes behind-the-scenes to show how he achieves his creative effects. It’s not just an inspiration for your own photos, it’s entertaining in its own right.
Cnotbusch is proof that Twitch isn’t only about gaming. He’s a sculptor, and his easygoing, casual streams show him making cool stuff and talking to viewers in a calming, engaging way. He’s like the Bob Ross of 2023.
British streamer Thomas ‘TommyInnit’ Simons earned millions of follows on YouTube and Twitch for his engaging Minecraft videos. He also has two Guinness World’s Records (most viewers of a Minecraft gameplay live stream on Twitch and most followed Minecraft channel on Twitch.) Not a bad career for an 18-year old.
Online stardom can come through focusing on a single talent. For Spencer X, that talent is beatboxing. Spencer has performed with Kendrick Lamar, Dead Prez, and the king of all beatboxers, Doug E. Fresh, and garnered over 55 million TikTok followers.
Among the most-watched streamer on Twitch and YouTube, Pokimane, aka Imane Anys, is known for her streams of League of Legends and Fortnite as well as being a founder and member of OfflineTV, a YouTube collective that makes comedy and lifestyle videos.
Ninja, aka Richard Tyler Blevins, is a professional gamer and streamer whose Twitch channel once boasted 19 million followers, mostly for his popular Fortnite streams. In September, he shocked the online world by announcing he was taking an indefinite break from streaming in the middle of a broadcast. He seems to be back now, though, on both YouTube and Twitch.
