Why a Paid-For, ChatGPT Professional Is Inevitable

Reading Time: 3 minutes

A professional version of ChatGPT is in the works, but how much would it cost?

Internet users are having fun with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. We’ve seen people write computer programs with it, author an entire book, compose rap songs, and even seen malicious actors create dangerous malware.

This has all been possible at the expense of OpenAI—at no cost to the user. Now, OpenAI is piloting plans to monetize the tool. Here’s everything we know so far.

OpenAI’s Waitlist for ChatGPT Professional

OpenAI’s decision to make ChatGPT publicly available at no cost is a money-guzzling decision but one that may soon pay off. By making the AI chatbot available to anyone who can sign up, the company created unparalleled publicity for its tool without too much of a publicity effort.

Now, the company has announced ChatGPT Professional, a premium version of ChatGPT geared at professional use. However, if you want to use it, you’ll need to sign-up for the ChatGPT Professional waitlist. OpenAI stressed in the waitlist document that access and potential use of the premium version are still experimental, subject to changes, and would only be available to a few select people for now.

What Will ChatGPT Professional Look Like?

OpenAI hasn’t revealed any information regarding what its ChatGPT Pro version will look like. However, based on recent events, we can make educated guesses.

As ChatGPT’s popularity grows, it has become commonplace to get alerts about ChatGPT being at capacity or ‘experiencing exceptionally high demand.’ This can either lead to frequent termination of a chat session (forcing you to log in again) or a complete restriction from accessing the service.

A pro version is almost guaranteed to fix this recurring and annoying problem. There aren’t many complaints about the errors because ChatGPT is a free service. However, once it launches a paid service, subscribers will likely have little appetite for such annoying problems, and OpenAI knows this.

Also, based on hints from OpenAI’s waitlist form, the Professional version will offer faster responses and room for as many messages as required.

Those additions aside, we also expect more. Something that would probably excite the ChatGPT power users’ community is to make safety restrictions more surgical. In the first few days of ChatGPT’s launch, users could get ChatGPT to do just about anything, some of which it can’t currently do due to safety restrictions by the OpenAI team.

While the safety restrictions are justified, it has a wide-reaching effect on the AI chatbot’s willingness (not ability) to answer certain questions. This has led to users using so-called ‘ChatGPT jailbreaks’ to bypass such restrictions. If such problems are fixed by better-targeted restrictions rather than wide-reaching ones, it will make the ChatGPT Pro version worth paying for.

How Much Will ChatGPT Pro Cost?

There’s still no information about the potential cost of ChatGPT Professional. However, considering OpenAI is currently polling users on how much they’d be willing to pay for it, we suspect that no definite decision has been made regarding pricing.

Also, it’s worth noting that ChatGPT is owned by OpenAI, a capped-profit firm that restricts how much profit it can make on investments. It is unclear whether this will affect its pricing model, but it will be a factor. Notwithstanding, ChatGPT could be similarly priced as OpenAI’s other tools like DALL-E or similar to AI writing tools like Writesonic.

Surely, not everyone is going to jump into the subscription model, which begs the question: will there still be a free ChatGPT version?

We can’t say with certainty, but it is very likely there’s still going to be a free version of ChatGPT, but with several restrictions. However, we imagine it’ll mean frequent blackouts and stricter restrictions on daily usage.

Even if there isn’t, companies like Microsoft are rumored to be making plans to integrate ChatGPT into its Office suite software like MS Word. There will likely be a future where ChatGPT as a service is accessed through multiple applications, although with a more streamlined use case.

ChatGPT Professional: An Exciting Future for Generative AI

It was apparent from the onset that ChatGPT wouldn’t remain free for long. So while going premium means we’ll all have to pay to enjoy the best that ChatGPT has to offer, it is a good thing because it lays the foundation for an improved product.

Once the premium version becomes open for all, it is bound to improve as OpenAI innovates to keep its subscriber base. Similar generative AI tools are also likely to spring up as companies watch the success of ChatGPT.
