What’s New on Prime Video in November 2022
Reading Time: 4 minutesBold of Amazon to build a show around James Corden in the year 2022.
Adorable: This holiday season, married actors John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are getting matching series on Prime Video. The third season of Krasinski’s Jack Ryan doesn’t drop until right before Christmas, while Blunt is getting the pre-Thanksgiving slot with The English (Nov. 11), a Tarantino-esque revenge thriller set in the American west of the late 19th century.

Blunt plays an aggrieved mother who teams with Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer, best known as one of Twilight‘s wolf pack), a Native American and former cavalry member, to hunt down the man she blames for the death of her son. The trailer promises visceral bloodshed delivered with tongue, if not firmly, then at least slightly poked into cheek: cool action poses, black humor, blood splatter, and ironic humor abound.
The show comes from British filmmaker/actor Hugo Blick, who has a long resume to match his cool name, not that I have personally heard of any of the shows he’s made. More familiar is the supporting cast, full of a host of ‘hey, it’s that guy’ actors from England and Ireland, including Rafe Spall, Stephen Rea, Toby Jones, and Ciaran Hands. Probably there’s at least one more woman in there too.
On the same day, Amazon will also launch the ‘relationship whodunnit’ Mammals, a six-episode miniseries about a famous chef whose world falls apart when he learns something shocking about his wife. Apparently knowing anything that happens beyond the first six minutes would constitute a massive spoiler, which I find intriguing. The presence of the extremely irritating James Corden in the lead role, less so. Still, the vague but enticing trailer and the presence of Sally Hawkins have me feeling cautiously optimistic.
If you haven’t gotten enough of Harry Styles lately (the addictive and then irritating new single! The Don’t Worry Darling drama! The ‘special salad dressing’ debacle!) prepare for wave…however many it has been when Prime premieres My Policeman on Nov. 4. It’s a staid drama about a closeted British police officer, played by Styles, who is involved with an affair with a male schoolteacher in the ’50s; The Independent slammed his performance as ‘criminally bad,’ which is a pretty good line.
Fans of comedies that you probably wouldn’t see in the theater (mostly because Hollywood doesn’t release them in theaters anymore) but will gladly catch on streaming should note the Nov. 18 debut of The People We Hate at the Wedding, which is about a family of misfits (including Kristen Bell, Allison Janney, and Ben Platt) who head to London for a wedding and seem to Ugly American themselves into a whole mess of trouble. It’s the feature debut of veteran TV director Claire Scanlon, who has helmed episodes of many of the best comedies of recent years, including Brooklyn 99, The Good Place, and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. That’s encouraging, though I am going to take issue with the trailer calling the source material a ‘beloved’ book; Grant Ginder’s novel has a mere 2.8 on Goodreads, which is lower than Mein Kampf (3.18).
Here’s everything else coming to Prime Video in November, including Good Night Oppy (Nov. 23), a documentary about the Mars Rover program that seems destined to make weepy anyone with a tendency to personify inanimate objects. Plus: what you’ll be able to find in November on ad-supported Amazon Freevee.
