What’s New on Netflix in September 2022
Reading Time: 5 minutesNetflix will premiere the NC-17 Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde.
The tumult of 2022—sinking stock prices, layoffs, high-profile cancellations—may have dimmed Netflix’s star as the streaming outlet where top creators flocked to make their passion projects. But you gotta give them credit for finally releasing Blonde, director Andrew Dominik’s adaptation of the Joyce Carol Oates novel inspired by the life of Marilyn Monroe, with its NC-17 rating intact.
More than the film’s rating has proven controversial, as the release of the full trailer had many scratching their heads at star Ana de Armas’ questionable accent, but I, a snooty film fan who loved Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and would jump at the chance to see its original three-hour cut, am simply pleased that the streamer didn’t force the auteur to rework his movie to fit conventional notions of commerciality. This might be the last time a director like Dominik gets a blank check from the company. In a time when big budget movies for adults are a rarer thing, I’ll take what I can get. The film drops Sept. 28.

Other movies and TV series coming to Netflix in September
Cobra Kai Season 5 (Sept. 9), the surprisingly enduring and delightfully soapy continuation of the Karate Kid franchise.
Eat the Rich: The GameStop Saga (Sept. 28), a documentary about the meme stock phenomenon that briefly made it seem like us poors had a chance at outsmarting the hedge funds back in 2021.
Lou (Sept. 23), which seems poised to turn Allison Janney into a Liam Neeson-in-Taken style AARP avenger, which is pretty awesome.
AeroGarden Bounty Elite LED Indoor Garden
Alexa-enabled
The planter includes a 50W adjustable LED to simulate the full spectrum of sunlight for your planties. It can be set to automatic timers and the digital screen can display your garden’s vital statistics.
Ivy & Bean (Sept. 2), three family films adapting the beloved children’s book series about two troublemaking best friends.
Do Revenge (Sept. 16), an absolutely over-the-top revenge drama about the cutthroat Gen Z high school world.
Rainbow (Sept. 30), a hip, gritty-looking Spanish-language import, which maps an outcast teen’s coming-of-ago onto a story inspired by The Wizard of Oz.
The Munsters (Sept. 27), the adaptation of the’60s sit-com with the trailer that got everyone asking why Rob Zombie had made what looks like a direct-to-video Nickelodeon film from 1997.
Bee and Puppycat (Sept. 6), a truly adorable animated series about a young woman who can’t keep down a job, and the magical cat (dog?) that tries to help her turn her life around. Originally produced independently via Kickstarter, the show has been picked up by Netflix for a new season, and older episodes will also be remade.
