What You Should Know About Using Windows Drivers on Steam Deck

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Did you know you can install Windows on your Steam Deck now?

Valve’s Steam Deck is a powerful handheld gaming computer. It’s got processors that can run up to 3.5GHz and a GPU you can crank to 1.6 TFlops. So the leap to using Windows on it instead of the bundled SteamOS isn’t a big one. Valve has officially released Windows 10 drivers for the Steam Deck for fans who want to run Windows on it.

What Can You Do With Windows Drivers on Steam Deck?

When Valve launched Windows drivers for the Steam Deck, four were available, which allowed technologically brave Deck owners who chose to switch OS allegiances to tinker with their devices. These were Windows drivers for the GPU, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and SD card reader. Valve has since released a few more drivers to make your Windows experience on the Steam Deck a little smoother.

Steam Deck Owners Can Now Install Windows 11

When Windows drivers were launched for the Steam Deck, Windows 10 was available, with Windows 11 compatibility waiting on a BIOS update. Now those who want to boot their Steam Deck consoles into the latest Windows platform have that option.

Steam Deck With Windows Now Has Audio

Chief among the new Windows drivers, however, are those for audio. Early adopters were forced to use USB-C or Bluetooth for their audio with Windows on the Steam Deck. The audio drivers for Steam Deck come in two separate files, and information on how to set that up is available on Valve’s Windows Resources page for the Steam Deck.

What’s Not Working Yet?

We’re almost over the line with Valve releasing more Windows drivers for the Steam Deck. The only thing remaining Valve hasn’t added to this powerful handheld is the ability to have two operating systems.

Dual-Boot Not Yet Available

Valve doesn’t yet have an official method to dual boot Windows and SteamOS on the Deck—there are a few unofficial ways to achieve this, however—although the Steam Deck Windows Resources page says it should be ready with SteamOS 3. Gamers wanting to dual-boot Windows and SteamOS will just have to wait a little longer.

Should You Install Windows on Your Steam Deck?

While nothing stops you from installing Windows on the Steam Deck, there is reason to be wary of doing so. This article by Tom’s Hardware shows that not all games are suited to Windows on Valve’s handheld.

However, you can download Windows drivers for Steam Deck directly from Valve if you’re rearing to go. The hyperlink takes you to Valve’s Steam Support page, which links the drivers currently offered for Windows 10 on Steam Deck.

Want to Install Windows 10 on Steam Deck? What You Should Know First

While Valve has the tools to install Windows on Steam Deck, there isn’t ‘Windows on Deck’ support for step-by-step installation instructions. However, if you somehow find yourself stuck during the process and want to put your Deck back to the way it was, Valve has recovery instructions to help you troubleshoot your way out.

The Deck may be an expensive console, starting at $399 and going up to $649, but there’s a lot to love about the Steam Deck. If you’re unsure whether you should add the Steam Deck to your collection of consoles or aren’t sure which model you should choose, our guide to selecting the right Steam Deck model for you should prove helpful.

Make the Most of Windows 10 on Steam Deck

If you’re looking to turn your Steam Deck into a Windows machine, you can get started right away with its support for GPU, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the SD card reader now available. You’ll have to wait a little longer for audio drivers and dual-boot functionality.
