Today we’re introducing LIVE Subscription, a monthly subscription on TikTok for people to show their appreciation for their favorite LIVE creators. LIVE Subscription will initially be available to invite-only creators this month and will then become available globally over the coming months.
This adds to the popular social media app’s features that are geared toward helping creators monetize their platforms. Earlier in May 2022, TikTok rolled out Pulse, a revenue-sharing program that helps creators make money through ads.
Unlike TikTok’s Creator Fund, which rewards creators for posting original content, LIVE Subscription allows them to earn a monthly income.
Social media apps are known to roll out features inspired by TikTok. In this case, TikTok takes a page out of Twitch’s book with the LIVE Subscription feature, which sets itself up as a Twitch competitor.
How TikTok’s LIVE Subscription Works
TikTok’s LIVE Subscription feature is like a mobile-focused version of Twitch. It allows creators and TikTok subscribers to engage more authentically. The feature benefits both creators and subscribers alike. Creators get subscribers on TikTok and earn a steady income, while subscribers enjoy perks that give them exclusivity and more visibility during a live stream.
For instance, when you subscribe to a creator’s LIVE Subscription, you get a badge, which is displayed next to your TikTok handle in the creator’s live stream. TikTok upgrades your badge as you reach certain milestones in your subscription.
Creators can turn on subscriber-only chats so that only their subscribers can comment during a live stream. This makes conversations between creators and subscribers less cluttered. The appeal of exclusive chats can encourage fans to pay for a creator’s subscription.
Subscribers also get access to exclusive emotes, which are stickers that are chosen and customized by creators for them to use in live chats. Additionally, they can receive exclusive content that creators might not upload to their profiles.
Several creators on the program have revealed that the feature will allow subscribers to control their cameras, although TikTok hasn’t confirmed this. When setting up their subscriptions, creators can include a bio to introduce themselves to their subscribers and a note to welcome them.
Who Can Get TikTok’s LIVE Subscription Feature?
In order to be eligible for LIVE Subscription as a creator, you must be 18 or older, with a minimum of 1,000 followers, and your content should not violate TikTok’s community guidelines.
Those who repeatedly violate TikTok’s rules can get banned from the program. The same rules apply to subscribers, except for the follower count requirement.
How to Subscribe on TikTok
It’s a bit tricky to subscribe on TikTok. It doesn’t seem like you can subscribe directly from a creator’s profile, so you’ll have to wait for them to go live and hope they’re eligible.
Hop on a creator’s live video. Look for a badge next to the names of the people on the live stream, which is an indication that they’ve subscribed. (This only applies if the creator is eligible for LIVE Subscription.)
Tap the badge and then tap the Subscribe button on the pop-up window. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process.
