What Are the 5 Most Expensive EVs You Can Buy?

Electric vehicles have a reputation for being more expensive than their gas-powered counterparts. This is a fair assessment at the moment, but eventually, EVs will go down in price.
Regardless, some electric cars are insanely expensive and supremely capable. Some of the best vehicles currently for sale are electric, especially at the extremes of the price spectrum. EVs are present in categories as diverse as hypercars, all the way to luxury sedans.
1. Rimac Nevera: $2,400,000
If you think the super quick Tesla Model S Plaid is the fastest EV for sale, think again. The Rimac Nevera is an electrified hypercar with four electric motors and over 1,900 horsepower.
The Rimac will also explode from 0-60 MPH in less than two seconds, 1.85 to be precise. All of this insane performance doesn’t come cheap, especially the full carbon fiber chassis. With cutting-edge technology and all the power in the world, the asking price of $2,400,000 is almost justified.
If you really need to make sense of a car worth way more than the average house, you can compare it to another insanely expensive car. The Bugatti Chiron will get smoked by the Rimac Nevera in most acceleration metrics, with the Bugatti only edging out the Rimac at the top end. Yet, the Bugatti is more than $3,000,000. Essentially, the Rimac can be seen as a bargain.
2. Lucid Air Sapphire: $249,000
The rare Lucid Air Sapphire will start at $249,000. This is definitely a princely sum for a vehicle based on the Air sedan, which begins at $87,400. The Sapphire edition of the Lucid Air is the Plaid equivalent of a Tesla Model S.
But, the price difference in the Sapphire’s case is staggering. Whether it’s worth it or not comes down to individual preference. If you need the fastest sedan on the road, at least until Tesla comes up with an answer, you should wait in line for the Sapphire’s release.
The entire point of this vehicle is to beat the Model S Plaid, and according to the numbers Lucid has published on its website, the Sapphire will most definitely beat most of the Plaid’s metrics.
Zero to 60 mph in less than two seconds. Zero to 100 mph in less than four seconds. The standing quarter mile in less than nine seconds. And over 200 mph.
These numbers are tailor-made to beat Tesla at its own game, so the world eagerly awaits the first showdown between these two electric juggernauts. The Tesla will have the price advantage, though, and the colossal asking price of the Lucid might be too much to overcome.
In some instances, like with hypercars, price is a bragging point. But, in the world of relatively mundane electric sedans, the Lucid comes off overpriced.
3. Porsche Taycan Turbo S: $187,400
Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S is the current regular production EV record holder around the Nurburgring. Clearly, the Taycan is a serious sports car, and the singular focus is also apparent in some of the car’s omissions.
The glaring weakness of Porsche’s Model S competitor is the mediocre range, especially for a car so expensive. Its starting price of $187,400 is difficult to justify compared to the Model S Plaid.
This is even crazier than the Lucid Air Sapphire’s base price because at least the Lucid is supposed to be faster than the Plaid. The Taycan doesn’t outperform the Model S Plaid unless you’re driving it hard around a racetrack, and even then, it’s not exactly a huge difference. Perhaps the ‘Porsche Feel’ is worth the premium you’ll end up paying over a Tesla.
But, for the smart buyer, the Model S Plaid is a steal compared to the overpriced Porsche. Even the looks are disappointing in relation to the price point. In person, a Model S Plaid looks wide and imposing.
Meanwhile, the Taycan looks like a refreshed Porsche Panamera. Unfortunately, I’m sure this isn’t what Porsche was going for with its ultimate EV. Hopefully, the next generation Taycan will improve its shortcomings because, at the moment, it only beats the Plaid in the price department.
4. Mercedes AMG EQS Sedan: $147,500
Mercedes builds one of the most expensive EV sedans you can buy. It’s also one of the most boring looking sedans for sale, EV or not. Even in AMG spec, the EQS looks like a huge third-generation Toyota Prius.
The interior is extremely nice, though, probably the best interior on a modern vehicle. The ambient lighting is superb, and the dash is completely filled with screens from side to side. It’s also one of the coolest cabins when the lights go out, with amazing ambient lighting that makes the interior look Tron-inspired.
But, if you’re paying this amount of money, the exterior should also show some flair. Sadly, it’s as bland as you can get. However, the EQS is supremely powerful though, with its 649 HP (751 with boost).
This is good for a run from 0 to 60 MPH in 3.4 seconds. I’m sure Mercedes will say that they don’t compete with the Model S because the EQS represents the pinnacle of luxury.
Which, in my opinion, is a lazy statement, and so is the vehicle’s 277 miles of range. Why is it that the German automakers are offering vehicles that are slower than the Model S Plaid, with less range, and also pricing them above the Plaid? It’s tough to justify the pricing schemes in terms of what you’re getting for the money.
5. The Model S Plaid: $135,990
It’s difficult to say that an almost $150k car is a bargain, but for the performance you get, the Plaid is an absolute steal. If destroying all challengers from 0-60 MPH is your hobby, the Model S Plaid was made with you in mind.
This car will obliterate any competition from a stop; it doesn’t matter if the other car is an exotic Italian supercar or a multimillion-dollar Bugatti. Performance like this is why the Model S Plaid is such a bargain; you’re essentially getting the fastest car in the world, plus room for your friends and their stuff.
Also, the 396 miles of range is phenomenal, especially compared to the measly 222 miles Porsche offers on the Taycan Turbo S. Basically, the Model S Plaid is faster than the Taycan in most metrics, looks better, has almost twice the range, and costs less.
All in all, the Plaid is a true bargain. Tesla has started a performance revolution with the Model S Plaid. It’s hard to imagine how supercar makers will top this once they start producing electric vehicles.
Don’t Forget About the Lotus Evija!
Ultra-expensive EVs aren’t very common at the moment, but the car world will soon be filled with all-electric supercars and hypercars. This is when EV prices will truly start to become ridiculously high.
Furthermore, a super expensive EV is missing from this list because it’s unavailable at the time of writing: the Lotus Evija. Set for release in 2023, the Evija looks like it will cost even more than the table-topping Rimac Nevera.
