WH Smith Data Stolen in Cyberattack

Popular British stationary and book retailer WH Smith has been hit with a cyberattack. The company has confirmed that data was stolen in the process.
WH Smith Suffers a Cyberattack
On March 2, 2023, retailer WH Smith informed the public of an attack via the London Stock Exchange website. In the notice, it was stated that ‘WH Smith PLC has been the target of a cyber security incident.’
WH Smith is a popular British chain selling stationary, books, and gifts, and raked in a profit of £63 million before tax in 2022 (as found by Statista).
The London Stock Exchange security notice concerning the incident was relatively brief, with limited information being released. However, it was disclosed that ‘some company data, including current and former employee data’ was accessed by the malicious operators in the attack, meaning a data breach did occur.
WH Smith Is Addressing the Incident
In the aforementioned security post, it was written that WH Smith PLC Is currently investigating the cyberattack, having ‘engaged specialist support services and implemented [its] incident response plans, which included notifying the relevant authorities.’
The company stated that it ‘takes the issue of cyber security extremely seriously,’ and is ‘notifying all affected colleagues’ of the attack, as well as putting measures in place to support these individuals.
The Cyberattack Has Not Affected WH Smith’s Trading
Toward the end of the London Stock Exchange security notice, WH Smith assured readers that its trading activities have not been affected by the cyberattack. The company also stated that its ‘website, customer accounts, and underlying customer databases are on separate systems that are unaffected by this incident.’

At the time of writing, WH Smith has not divulged many details regarding this cyberattack and subsequent data breach. But this may change in the near future as more is discovered about the nature of this attack via the company’s investigation.
