Introduction
Christmas is coming! So, I thought it’s time to create a great idea for my kids and I to have fun by playing a classic game with a twist! I got this idea from watching Run BTS episodes where the members are playing BTS Marble. These are episodes 27 (MT with BTS Part 1), episode 37 (BTS Marble is Back!), and episodes 93 & 94 (BTS Marble Part 1 & Part 2). BTS Marble is a board game where you roll the dice and land on standard BTS games. It’s a game made by the staff of Run BTS exclusively for the members and the show.
While it’s fun to play BTS Marble, I don’t have the time to create an exact replica of it, so I just created my own. I just thought of one of the easiest and most classic board games and created some twist to it. The board game I chose is Snakes & Ladders. Ironically, while I’m scared of snakes in real life and find it hard to climb ladders, Snakes & Ladders is a board game that I used to play and have fun playing when I was young, which is why I chose this game. Then, I also chose other easy but fun games to play within this board game.
How to Play
Each player has 100 points at the start of the game. They will play Snakes & Ladders. The original way to play this board game is to roll the dice to determine the number of steps to take. The player climbs up when the pawn lands on a ladder and slides down when the pawn lands on a snake. To give it a twist, I created another rule where the player has to pick a game to play every time the pawn lands on a snake. The game is determined by a roulette that I created using an app that I downloaded from the Google Play Store called Spin the Wheel. It’s free to use its basic feature which is to create wheels to spin, and I just edited the templates that are already there. The roulette wheels will determine the game to play, the points to score if the player wins the game, and as a consequence, points will be deducted if the player loses the game. There are games where the player would need an opponent, so I added another wheel (LEFT/RIGHT) to determine who will be the opponent.
GAMES
- AIR HOCKEY – I just downloaded this from the Play Store. It’s free and can be played offline. The ads are crazy when you play something that’s free, so I really opted for something that can be played offline to avoid being disrupted by ads. To play this game, the player can opt to play with someone by spinning the LEFT/RIGHT roulette wheel to determine if he/she will be playing against the person on the left, or the right. This will give the opponent a chance to win points but will also bear the consequence of having points deducted if he/she loses. If the player decides not to choose an opponent, the player will play against AI, which for me is harder because when I tried this game as a single player and played against AI, I never won.
- Piano Tiles – Again, I just downloaded this from the Play Store. The player has to get a score of 90 to win this, so this might be the easiest to win amongst the rest of the games unless the player is really bad at this game.
- Rock Paper Scissors – this is a game that everyone knows how to play and it’s also one of the easiest in terms of mechanics. However, it’s not a game based on skill (unless you can read minds or is good in predicting your opponent’s choice like Mai Whelan from Squid Game: The Challenge who won $4.56 million for winning the final round of game which happened to be rock paper scissors!). That being said, there is no way I wasn’t going to include this classic game in this new board game with a twist that I have created.
- Odd or Even – this is also a game of luck where the player has to predict if the page of the book I’ll be opening has an odd or even number on the so-called ‘recto’ which is the right-hand page of an open book. And just as an FYI, the left-hand page of an open book is called ‘verso,’ in case you want to give the player a chance to choose which part of the book he/she thinks has an odd or an even number.
- Soulmates – this is one of the standard games in BTS Marble and other Run BTS episodes where they play games. I’m not sure if it’s really called Soulmates, but I think that’s what I heard, and the logic is to choose between the two choices given and make sure you choose the same one that the other one would choose. Examples: Chocolate or Milk, Pencil or Pen, Black or White, and so on. The player can choose to have an opponent who will also get a chance to earn points or bear the consequence of losing points. If the player decides not to play with an opponent, then the player will play against ME, the creator and facilitator of the game.
SCORES
I just chose 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 points to lose or earn from the original point of 100 which will be given to players at the start of the game. All points will be added once the game is over, and the players will be ranked 1st, 2nd, and 3rd since I have three kids. By the way, this game is good to play with 2 to 4 players, but feel free to create new rules, or use different games, scores, etc. I’m sure you got the gist of the mechanics already because it’s an easy but fun board game with a twist.
PRIZES!
Since I created this for my kids to play on Christmas, I wanted to make sure everyone will be getting something so I am buying a Christmas basket for each of them that they will get just by playing, no matter what rank they end up with. And to make it more worthwhile, I decided to give money as a prize. The one who ranks first in the game will of course get the highest money prize, but the 2nd and 3rd prizes aren’t bad at all.
Have a Happy Holidays, everyone! Hope this game makes it more fun for children and adults to spend their Christmas or any other party in the future!
