This Mac Keyboard App Is Great for Users Who Speak More Than One Language
Reading Time: 2 minutesThis app automatically switches keyboards depending on what you’re doing.
If you type in Spanish in iMessage, Portuguese in WhatsApp, and English in Slack on your Mac, you’re probably annoyed by the effort it takes to keep switching keyboards. Input Source Pro wants to solve that problem. The app automatically changes the input method depending on which website or app is open, and you can even set up custom shortcuts to switch to a different keyboard.
How to automatically switch to a different keyboard on your Mac
The first step is to add multiple keyboards to your Mac by clicking the Apple logo in the top-left corner of the screen and going to System Settings > Keyboard and clicking Edit next to Input Sources. Press the + button and add as many keyboards as you need.
When you’re done and you’ve installed Input Source Pro, you can open the app to set up your automations. Under the General tab, be sure to select Launch at Login to allow the app to start when your Mac turns on.
Next, go to the App Rules tab and select the default keyboard at the top. Ideally, this should be the language you use the most. You can then click on any app from the list on this page and set a custom keyboard.
Then click the Browser Rules tab, set the default keyboard at the top, and start adding website URLs by clicking the + button. Once you’ve set up rules for multiple websites, be sure to check the correct browsers for each rule. If you don’t select any browser, you won’t see any change in the keyboard.
One final step involves recording keyboard shortcuts to switch to different keyboards. Go to the Keyboards tab and set up a shortcut for each input method. This will let you manually switch to the keyboards of your choice in any app.
After that’s set up, you can open the respective apps and websites, and Input Source Pro will handle the rest. The app is free to download and use right now because it’s in beta (although it runs like an official app). The pricing model will be revealed once the stable release is available.
