Have you heard of Apple Arcade and wondered what it is or whether it’s worth giving it a go? Well, we’re here to make things easier for you by giving you the pros and cons of the service. This way, you can decide whether it’s worth it or not.
What Is Apple Arcade?
Apple Arcade is a video game subscription service similar to Google Play Pass for Android users. For a monthly or annual fee, Apple Arcade grants you access to hundreds of games not available to download on the App Store, including award-winning games and new releases.
For $4.99 a month, you can enjoy unlimited access to various premium games on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV. However, you can pay less with an Apple One subscription or an annual fee of $49.99, which saves you about $10. And if you’re subscribing for the first time, you also get a free trial to check out the service before you spend any money.

The Pros of Subscribing to Apple Arcade
Apple Arcade will likely be a huge draw for gaming enthusiasts and casual gamers looking for exciting titles on the App Store. There are several reasons why an Apple Arcade subscription is great, like the awesome game library and the lack of ads and in-app purchases.
So, let’s look at all the pros of an Apple Arcade subscription below.
1. Access to Hundreds of Games With a Single Subscription
There are over 200 games available on Apple Arcade, including awesome titles like The Bradwell Conspiracy, Neo Cab, Overland, Sayonara Wild Hearts, and many more. You can play various categories of games with Apple Arcade, from sports to racing to adventure games. Even better, you can do it for free. All you need is a subscription, and any Apple Arcade game you want is just a tap away.
In addition to exclusive games, Apple Arcade offers some paid App Store games, like Alto’s Adventure and GRIS, for free. Also, you can play these games with an Apple Arcade subscription rather than paying for them individually.
2. Access to Games Not Available on the App Store
The App Store has a good selection of free and paid games, but it doesn’t have all the games. With an Apple Arcade subscription, you can play tons of games that aren’t available on the App Store, like Oceanhorn 2, Assemble With Care, and Skate City.
If there’s a title you can’t get on the App Store, chances are it’s available on Apple Arcade. So, if you don’t want to miss out on fun games, you might want to consider a subscription. That way, you can have the best of both the App Store and Apple Arcade.
3. No Ads or In-App Purchases
While ads and microtransactions are a standard feature of free-to-play games and the reason they’re free, they can be pretty annoying by interrupting your gameplay and sometimes even ruin the experience completely.
One of the best things about an Apple Arcade subscription is that you no longer have to deal with pesky ads. You also don’t have to make in-app purchases, so once you get the game on Apple Arcade, there won’t be any micro-transactions. You’re only paying for your subscription.
Certain games are available on both the App Store and Apple Arcade. On the former, these games are typically free with in-app purchases. On the latter, they’re free and don’t include in-app purchases. So, games like Episode and Asphalt 8: Airborne, which include in-app purchases on the App Store, are free from them on Apple Arcade.
4. Play Across Devices
An Apple Arcade subscription lets you play across Apple devices like your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. Thanks to the service’s integration with Apple’s ecosystem, you can start playing a game on one device and continue on another.
You can sync your progress and achievements across your devices with Apple Arcade provided you’re signed in to the same iCloud and Game Center accounts.
5. Access for Multiple People
Thanks to Apple’s Family Sharing feature, you can share your Apple Arcade subscription with up to five people. You and your family can access the games on Apple Arcade as long as one of you has a subscription. Play against family members, or let your kids enjoy tons of fun, exclusive games.
The Cons of Subscribing to Apple Arcade
Apple Arcade isn’t without its flaws, and some of its negatives may deter you from subscribing. So, here are the cons of paying for an Apple Arcade subscription.
1. You Don’t Own the Games
One of the worst things that can happen to gamers is losing their progress. Imagine racking up tons of achievements and unlocking many features in a game, only to lose everything. Well, that’s what can happen with an Apple Arcade subscription.
You lose all your saved game data when you unsubscribe from Apple Arcade. So, for example, if you cancel your Apple Arcade subscription while playing Asphalt 8: Airborne+ and then go on to download Asphalt 8: Airborne from the App Store, you’ll be starting the game from scratch.
The only way to keep your game data is to keep your Apple Arcade subscription.
2. Not for Hardcore Gamers
Apple Arcade might not appeal to you if you’re a hardcore gamer. Sure, it has some exclusive titles, like Sonic Racing and Shinsekai Into the Depths, but not nearly as much as we’d like. To mention a few, AAA titles like FIFA 22, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us, Beyond Good and Evil, and Far Cry are unavailable on Apple Arcade.
Apple Arcade targets mostly casual gamers and children. As such, a subscription might not be right for you if you’re looking for hardcore games. For that, you may want to switch to PC gaming or buy a console.
3. Gameplay Is Limited to Apple Devices
Because Apple Arcade is an Apple service, it’s only available within the Apple ecosystem. As such, you can only access your Apple Arcade subscription on an Apple device.
So, if you attempt to play a cross-platform Apple Arcade game, like Asphalt 8: Airborne, on an Android device, you won’t be able to transfer your progress between the two platforms; this means you’ll lose your saved game data, which would be terrible.
4. No Dedicated Search Option
It’s surprising and disappointing that there still isn’t a way to search for games within Apple Arcade. Instead, you have to use the search bar in the App Store, which provides you with a list of both App Store and Apple Arcade games.
While in the Apple Arcade section of the App Store, you can only find games by scrolling through various categories if you don’t want to see everything the service has to offer.
A dedicated search option would make navigating the Apple Arcade a lot easier, allowing us to find titles in no time without having to wade through tons of apps first.
Apple Arcade Is Great, but Not Perfect
An Apple Arcade subscription is great for casual gamers and people looking for exclusive titles that aren’t available on the App Store. It’s sort of like Netflix for games; you can pick from a large selection of games every month for a fee. The lack of ads and in-app purchases allows you to enjoy an immersive gaming experience.
However, you’ll lose your saved game data if you cancel your subscription, and you can only use it within the Apple ecosystem. So, weigh the pros and cons before subscribing to the service. And if that doesn’t help, take advantage of the free trial to make an informed decision.
