New documents make Johnny Depp look really bad
The saga of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard seems destined to go on forever. Both sides are appealing the decisions against them, and 6,000 pages of court documents were recently unsealed and are shedding new light on the behind-the-scenes in their toxic relationship. The cost of having the documents sent and posted was crowd-sourced by pro-Depp folks in an effort organized by attorney Andrea Burkheart, presumably designed to dig up more dirt on Heard, but it didn’t work out that way; the documents are not necessarily flattering to Johnny Depp.
Among the revelations: Depp’s team wanted to submit nude photos of Heard into evidence and tried to use the death of Heard’s friend against her, text messages that were not allowed into evidence where Depp calls himself a ‘fucking savage’ and a ‘lunatic.’ If you have an appetite for rooting around in the dirty laundry of celebrities, all 6,000 pages are available online for your perusal.
Slang of the week: What does ‘Gyat’ mean?
If you’ve been seeing the word ‘gyat’ or ‘gyattt’ lately in the comment section of videos on YouTube or TikTok, you can mentally substitute ‘goddamn.’ But not ‘goddamn’ in a cursing sense; more like the way a young straight man might say ‘god-DAMN’ when a curvy young woman walks by. Coined by twitch/YouTube gamer YouRAGE, it’s pronounced like ‘ge-YAT!’ and is generally screamed. For a perfect example of how it might come up in conversation, check out this video. As an acronym, gyat can also mean ‘get your act together,’ but I doubt it’s been used that way very often.

Friend groups on TikTok
Young people on TikTok and Twitter are examining the structure of their social circles and it will remind you of a time when you had enough energy to take an interest in the people you surround yourself with. The #friendgroup tag on TikTok is filled with friendship-based memes, heartfelt/poignant tributes to homies, and even cartoons! My favorite friend-toker is Ethan Davitt, who details many different kinds of friend groups using pop culture references, like labeling a group of friends with a leader of the opposite sex as the Wizard of Oz; when two sets of friends team up, it’s Lord of the Rings.
The Lion King musical re-created in Minecraft
The things Minecraft users do sometimes make me step back and say, ‘woah.’ Who knew there was a thriving community of theater fans using the game to re-create stage musicals? One of the most elaborate efforts is Orrg Studios’ take on The Lion King. Virtual theater-goers step into a Minecraft version of Hamburg’s theater district, walk to their seats in a one-to-one re-creation of Theater im Hafen, then, assisted by ushers, sit down and watch a full-length version The Lion King performed by virtual puppeteers.
Unlike the physical show, guests can poke around backstage to see how everything works. Reading about The Lion King took me down the unique rabbit-hole of Minecraft’s virtual theater scene, where fans have re-created Shrek the Musical, Aladdin, and other shows with a level of passion and attention-to-detail that’s truly mind-blowing. You can watch a good portion of The Lion King on YouTube, but it’s not the same as really attending the virtual show. Speaking of, it’s totally free, but only 20 guests can watch each show for technical reasons.
Viral video of the week: Primitive Technology: Trebuchet
This week’s viral video is from YouTube’s favorite nature boy, Primitive Technology. This week, the shirtless dude from the beginning of time is making a trebuchet! Past projects taught us how to make a tiled roof using only stone-aged tools, took a deep dive on the cultivation of yams, and explained all one could ever want to know about weaving. All his step-by-step videos are weirdly hypnotic—they don’t feature a voice-over, music, or any production enhancements, just pure pre-historical action—but a trebuchet offers something a thatched roof does not: an ending in which a heavy rock is launched through the air to smash into a target. After the apocalypse, you’re going to rush to watch this channel and learn to repel marauders stealing your wheat, only to find you don’t have electricity, let alone an internet connection, so watch and learn now before it’s too late
